I have an 03 quad cab 4x4 4.7 with a 9.25 rear axle and an 8 inch front axle. I am going to be towing 4500lbs and will be changing my axle ratio to 4.10. Are there any gear brands that are recommended, or on the other hand any that I should stay away from?

Why change gears? I pull a 5000 lb travel trailer with the standard 3.55 ratio in my '03, 4.7, 4x4 QC. Your truck was factory rated for 10,500 Gross Combined Weight with this rear end. So 6000 lb of loaded truck and 4500 lbs of trailer. If you've got the 3.92, it's 11,500. I shift down more, up the hills - but hey it does 55 in third at about 3000 rpm - no prob!

If you really want to change - search for "GraphiteDak", here and on the web. He went to 4.56's 'cause he wanted to pull a toy hauler! He used to post here but probably got tired of the flamers.
For me, there's no need to change, cause I've got Stick Shift!

Yeah, if you decide to change, do it because you want to - you won't have to. Mine's not the quad cab, but I started with 4.7/3.55 auto combo. That will pull that load just fine too, just don't be afraid to let it sing. The 4.7 loves revs towing, and it was made to be a high reving engine. Pulled 5-6000# in NH small mountains , no trouble. I went to 4.10 for fun, and got easier towing as a bonus. Biggest difference is getting the load rolling easier. I'd take it easier getting rolling with the 3.55 so you take it easy on u-joints, etc. I went with Yukon too - not the best but not the worst. Installer had to clean them up a bit. See who your installer likes if not doing it yourself. Also an Auburn sure grip, while they were at it. GraphiteDak still checks in once in a while, on the members board not to long ago.

Thanks for the input. My local dealer is trying to sell me Motive brand gears, but I am not familiar with their products. I will be doing the work myself. Kowalski, when you say that your installer had to clean up the gears, do you mean they was a little surface rust or were the castings poor?
I have towed 3500lbs through the mountains in B.C where I live with the 4.7/auto with overdrive off/3.55 combo and not been satisfied with the performance. It does have the factory tow package. I am sure that it would pull the heavier load as is, but I would be more satisfied with the 4.10 ratio. At 100-110kmph, with overdrive off I want to be around 3200-3300rpm. It pulls nice for me in that rpm range, and with the 3.55's I can't keep it in that range. Thanks again for the input.

I've got the same truck and trailer as you, and am also in BC (Quesnel). I've got the 3.92 gears and towing package. My travel trailer is 4500 dry and 24' long. It pulls great, but steep long hills the 4.7 is really working and I have definitely thought about 4.11's on those steep hills. Like Kowalski says: "don't be afraid to let it sing". I'm getting a Superchips programmer soon for that little extra boost.

I have hauled the trailer from Quesnel to Green Lake and back. It's about a 3 hour trip one-way. That is about as far as I want to go with it, but I also like just getting to a destination quickly so I tend to not travel for more than an hour or so.

With cheaper gears, I don't think the problem is limited to rust or poor casting. Don't forget poor tolerences - I think that's where better quality gears prove their worth. Why would you get gears from your local dealer ? It would seem to make more sense to deal directly with the gear manufacturers.

The reason I am staying with the 3.55's vs. 4.10 is I have the 5.9. While the 4.7 may gain hwy mileage with the 4.10's the 5.9 does not, so I never installed the fronts. With the 5.9 it did help towing and helped with around town gas mileage, but I just couldn't get the highway mileage to come back. Gained 2 mpg town, lost 2 mpg hwy.

I think the Yukons are better than Motive's IMO. They are definitely more expensive.

Is a place to check prices and part numbers.

I have a used rear set (yukon 4.10's) for 9.25, about 1000 miles on them - perfect condition.
Also new unused Yukon 4.10's for the 8" front with minor install kit.
Also checker bearings for setting pinion depth.

Can make you a fair deal if you are interested.

Not trying to push it, just letting you know if you want to save some $$$.

Does the Gen 4&5 come with 4.10's?

Be great if you would have something heavy to tow, but why not 4.56 gears instead?
