LOL,

No, it's not a porno or prank post.

When installing my new shocks today, when I had the front wheels off, I re-lubed/greased the caliper bolts, you know, the ones the calipers slide on. I used the special synthetic kind they have in the small packs by the cash register. Keeps the calipers from binding and freezing up.

At 146,000 miles, I'm still on my ORIGINAL front pads, rotors (never turned on lathe), rear shoes and drums.

The pads still have alot left, and the rotors look real good!

I still say it's my driving style, having a manual tranny, but most importantly, using the E-brake every time I park it.

That IS a notable amount of mileage on the original set of pads/ shoes...but I fail to see the connection with using the parking brake when you park it. Using the parking brake simply sets the rear shoes against the drums while the vehicle is static. Other than that, your rig is sitting, statically, the same as anybody else's. It is definitely your driving habits that are adding to their longevity...which obviosly does not match your clever "Drive it like it's paid for!" signature. Good on ya though, remembering to release it before driving again...have seen that done before.

Using the e-brake prevents the parts from becoming corroded. That's a frequent problem with rear brake failure.

Getting 150k on a set of brake pads is no big deal. It's all in the way you drive it. You do like a lot tree huggers do and slowly coast to a stop (which is very annoying to those following) or you can down shift aggressively, which most certainly cause wear on other components, all of which are far more expensive than brakes. There are no free rides when it comes to slowing vehicle down quickly.

Driving a vehicle "like you own it" and driving "like you stole it" are two very different things. Owners can be very conservative or very aggressive. TT obviously is not an aggressive driver.

Thanks for the replies,

other bill,

Actually, using the E-brake my manual says keeps the rear shoes in adjustment, just like reversing and slamming on the brakes does. So, according to my owners manual, it does help. And we all, or both know that keeping the rear brakes working well, (especially when they are the dated, drum-shoe style) takes alot of work off the front disc-rotor assembly. :-)

N56629,

I don't think I 'annoy' those behind me while driving. I do 'glide' quite often though, and I DON'T accelerate to a stop sign or red light thats fairly close ahead, where I'm going to have to stop anyway.

I feel I am a fairly aggressive driver, I just DON'T EVER tailgate, or follow too closely.

I often get a nice, posi, 2nd gear scratch when accellerating, nearly every day, which has nothing to do with the brakes however.

I also do usually downshift, but have notice the the rpm's never get over 2000 rpms when I do in eacjh gear.

I think that the auto trannies put more stress on the brakes. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)

Timmy Tard you are just one retarded idiot. Go back to flipping burgers!

When ever I drive my manuel shift truck, I always shift every 2500 RPM's on the hwy, its a V6 and of course needs some extra power to get in moving from a near stop in city driving.

I had to replace all the drums, front pads, rotors and even the E brake pedal had to be replaced,(use it to much a guess. But other than that it's a great pick-up.

A grease here and a grease there always does the trick for me, what about you Tod?

daddio,

You my friend, are Right!

Where I live and go to usually invloves alot of highway, and usually, I'm lucky enough to go during non peak traffic times.

You got to admit, it's still alot of miles!

All the talk, when it was new in 2001, about the warped rotors, etc. (was actually uneven build up on the rotors), and/or the caliper bolts sticking!

Drive it like its paid for!

Yep

The joke is on the tree huggers, as everyone around them burns a lot more gas by having to accelerate around the idiot who is about to make them miss the light up ahead. Well, people don't HAVE to accelerate around the slow poke, they just DO!
