Subject: MOPAR MAN WHO KNOWS DAKOTA REAR AXLES
IP: Logged

Message:
I HAVE 3 DAKOTAS, 94,95,2000, WHEN YOU JACK REAR WHEELS OFF THE GROUND AND GRAB THE WHEEL YOU CAN PULL IN AND OUT, I KNOW THAT IS CALLED THE BACKLASH IN THE AXLES, MY 2000 SEEMS TO HAVE MORE THOUGH THAN MY OTHER 2. MY FIRST QUESTION IS THERE ANY ADJUSTMENT ON THESE AXLES FOR THAT? IF NOT IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WEARS ON THESE TO CREATE MORE BACKLASH THAN FACTORY SPEC.? AND LAST DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE BACKLASH SHOULD BE?

There is not really any adjustment for that. I have seen the ends of the axles wear down from rubbing on the center pin and that will cause it to have alot more movement. If it gets too bad you will eventually have to replace the axles.

There is a slim possiblity that the "C" clip is wearing, and if thats the case you would need to replace them because if they fail, your axle will leave the housing. Probably at the worst possible time. Its an easy fix if thats the case though.
Good Luck

Does anyone have a good manual that tells you what a max. backlash can be, and what the max. clearance should be from the axle end to the center pin? Maybe even c-clip thickness should be?

I don't have that info in a manual, but I believe generally you're okay with up to about .020" free play. I'm more familiar with the older 8 3/4 rear, which had an adjustment for this; but I'm not aware of that for the 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 that would likely be in your truck. There were at least two different thickness c-clips, with many years using both - but from what I've read, '00 and up are likely the thicker c-clip style. Hope that points you in the right direction...

Yes kowalski I remember the 8-3/4 rearend with the nice adjustments on the axles. I cant find no adjustments on these rearends, And I will tell you since it is a c-clip axle it is way more than .020 I guess I will have to look for wear inside of it at the ends of the axle. But I thought they may give you a number in the manual for the end of the axle to the center pin in the carrier after you put it back in?

Backlash on the 9.25 is .006" to .008" The backlash can be adjusted, but you need a special tool to make this adjustment.

Hi 03 QC SPORT, Not the backlash for the ring gear on the carrier, the backlash in and out on the rear axles. Is there any specs. for this in your manual? Like maybe from the end of the axle to the pin that goes thru the carrier or something?

I believe the correct terminology for the movement of the axle would be “endplay”. "Backlash" would be associated with gears.
