I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota 6 cylinder with factory cruise control. Sometimes when I go up a hill the cruise control basically punches it to the floor to the point of almost red lining the tacometer. Once speed is reached it shifts back and is smooth. It doesn't do it all the time. About 1/2 the time. I might as well manually slam the accelerator to the floor instead of letting the cruise do it every time it goes up a hill and pulls down. Any ideas on what the problem is? It did it back in 2000 and the dealership claimed they fixed it but it never really has been right. It is just starting to do it more often.

Most vehicles do this when your going up a hill. Your truck is just trying to get back up to the speed you set your cruise control at. If your coming up on a steep grade just take it out of cruise until the incline is behind you.

Your six cylinder simply doesn't have enough power in overdrive to take the hill so it has to down shift. I also have a six, but its a stick, whenever I go up a a local pass I have to down shift if I want to keep my speed where its at.

Cruise control is more for for flat long drives not for driving through mountains and passes, where you'll probably have to maneuver through some tight turns anyways.

Hope that helps.

I installed a Rostra aftermarket cruise on my 2001. I also have a V6
and 5 speed and it will do the same thing, give it more throttle to
maintain speed up hills. But it doesn't redline the tach, it only
speeds up a few hundred RPM's. Maybe your PCM and cruise are
out of whack somehow. Or there's a problem with the motor in the
factory cruise module. It would be worth a scan with the DRB Tool
at the dealer to see if there is some problem there.
