I've put 105K miles on my '01 Dakota, and I'v enjoyed almost all of them. But in the last year I'v had to sink a lot of money into it. It even left me stranded in the middle of nowhere last fall.

I was left with two choices: Spend a boatlaod of money and rebuild everything. 2. Spend a boatload of money and trade it in for a diesel.

Since I'll be using it mostly for towing, I chose #2.

This afternoon I purchased a very nice '07 Ram 2500 QC with a diesel. It's a very nice truck, and I'm pleased. It's red - not my favorite, but I can live with it. I think it will tow my medium weight trailer very nicely.

I was hoping Dodge would make a Dakota with a small diesel. But it doesn't look like that will happen any time soon. If it does, I'll be back to the dealership.

Yup, Im in that same situation with my '01 with 144k. I'd like to get a plain reg cab 2500 with the Cummins, but most likely wont be able to afford it. Might look into another Dakota to hold me over a few more years... Good luck with your new one.

Hear Hear,

Make a toast to all the Dakota owners that spend a Sh*T load of money just to keep there rides on the road.

And I'm one of them.

Can't wait to trade in my '95 and probably even the 03 on something like a Durango or even a 07 Dakota. Or maybe I'll get me a GMC Sierra with the very powerfull LMM Diesel (Duramax.)

Just not a fan of the 6.7 Cummins, I mean come on; a engine that produce 350 HP and you only get 650 Ftbls toruqe in return?? Dodge needs Cummins Diesal with true Cummins power.

Well, can't complain with my '94, It flipped past 265K miles as of today. Still has a decent running motor. (Can't beat a good ole leaky 318)

I've posted somewhere on this board that Chrysler will manufacture two types of diesels. The largest being a 5 litre V8 Cummins rated over 270 HP and a 4.2L V6. Both should be 24 Valve motors and probably OHC engines. But little information has been giving out regarding all the specs.

I seem to think, that the Dakota-Durango platforms will being using the newer 256 cid engine.

I picked up my "new" truck last night. It's quite a truck. One of the things I like best about my 5.9 V8 was the torque. Although not a race car by any stretch of the imagination, when you stepped on the gas it went.

But this Cummins is something else! Talk about torque. My past diesel experiance has been military vehicles and rental trucks. Not exactly stellar performance there. Step on the pedal and this truck jumps.

When you drive this, you know you're driving a truck. The suspension is solid, and truck-like. Not harsh, but solid. But it's surprisingly quiet on the highway. A lot quieter than my Mustang.

Just driving around town, it gets 17mpg. The dakota was getting 11.

A lot of things I like, a couple of things need getting used to, and I'll make a couple of small changes here and there. Nothing dramatic, and no engine mods.

I hated to get rid of my long time friend. But, he was old, and didn't really fit my needs any more. Time for retirement. If that 42.L diesel shows up in a Dakota, I'll be back at the dealership to take a look.

Say, what type of transmission you got with the 5.9? Is it the 48RE or NVG-56?

Let me guess, you also got a 2x4. And nothing worng with a 2x4, My new fullsize will most likley be 2 wheel spin.

If you don't need it then why buy it.

The trans is the stock 48re. By all accounts, a good trans and a definate step up from the pre-Mercedes parts.

I got the 4x4. Do I need it? No probably not. But I'v driven through enough snow storms to make 4x4 a priority.

This truck won't be my daily driver; I have a Mustang for that. I will use the truck during snow days, and for towing my track car around. And for whenever I have more than 2-3 people to carry around. I'd bet I don't put more than 5K miles a year on it. We'll see.

I agree with buying a heavy 4x4 truck, you'll never know when you'll kneed. I've sliped in ditches on the side of the road.(very small) due to black ice, and the 4x4 always well get you out of trouble (as long as you got good tires).

My next car just might be a Crown Vic LX (yeah some guy in his 20's driving cop, taxi, old folks, car) but I just seem to like the fact that its the only car made here in the U.S with a solid axel in the back, plus you can haul some gear and even tow up to 2 tons.

I also like the Magnum, but it could really do with a larger rear window.

Then again I just might trade for a 06 Dakota with a H.O 4.7L

Correction

boB said 5.9 V8. I guess you was thinking of the good ole Magnum of yesterday.

I6 is really the way to go. But GM got one of the best transmission around, and the Isuzu desinged diesel isn't all that bad.
