Subject: The 95 dakota casket case

All Right, I bought a 95 Dakota sport, 4cyl,5spd. It had been sitting for 5 years. The engine was seized.
So I rebuilt the engine. It looks great. Wish that was the important part. It fires right up then dies. Thought it was something with the asd. Checked it, everything is good. I thought i had good fuel pressure, now i'm not so sure. I've checked for the corosion and cleaned the terminals.
So I'm now replacing the fuel pump. If there is something I'm missing. Give me a shout.

I would not replace the pump yet, Rick James.
Did you remove the line from the fuel rail and
cycle the key on a few times to see if fuel would
flow first? It should flow (with a lot of
pressure) for about 5 seconds when the key is
turned on. If it does, there is nothing wrong
with the pump.

There isn't a fuel rail. It is a tbi set up. I tested the pressure, it was about 20. Between the 4 books I have for this truck the fuel pressure should be either greater than 14.5 or between 37-41 psi. So which is it? Thanks for the response.

Ok.... I replaced the fuel pump and it fired right. It seemed to run ok. Idled fine and everything, but the check engine light was on. So I turned it off and then back on again. Back to the same problem. It starts right up then dies but the engine light isn't on. WTF

If the gas is 5 years old, it might have gone bad (contaminated, water, ect)

I am not to familiar with the 95' 4cyl but I would check the throttle body injection port attachments and make sure everything is sealed (no fuel/air leaks in the system!)

The only other thing I can think of is if your timing is off

Try checking the engine fault codes
http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/gas/Trouble/pcm_fault_code.htm

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response. When I changed the fuel pump I changed out the gas. We are now going back through everything including the throttle body crap. What a POS!

Don't forget to check that wiring 'splice'
under the underhood fuse/relay box .
It is about 6 to 10 inches down the harness .
May be a good idea to clean , tighten all
chassis / ground connections you can find
in the engine compartment.
How are those [ quik disconnects ] in the battery cables ?

On my 2001, if you use a key that was cut, but doesn't have the plastic end with the chip in it, it will start, run for about 15secs., then die every time.

Don't know if your 1995 has this feature though.

Good luck.

PS- I guess you're looking for mpg by using the 4 banger?
