I have an 01 Dakota, manual transmission, 110,000 miles,

I tried starting it this morning but the key will not turn, and I have tried pushing in the button next to the wheel, I have tried turning the wheel some and turning the key,

the steering wheel is locked,

any suggestions as to how to start my truck?

without taking the steering column apart?

thanks,

Dan.

Sounds like you have tried all the obvious remedies. Maybe call the dealer and ask for something else to try...explain you are trying to get it started to get it to them for repair? Other than that, sounds like the column needs to come apart. Good luck!

Will the steering wheel move at all, even just a little, one way or the other? Can you push the button by the ignition switch and turn the key backwards to the accessory position? If you can't do that or if it is very hard to get the key to turn back to lock or accessory, the ignition lock lever (which is connected to the button you push to turn the key to lock or accessory) could be broken. If it is, Dodge says it can not be replaced. To fix it they say to replace the steering column. Which really doesn't look like as big a job as it sounds, since they made it so you use a lot of the original parts off the old column when you replace it. I bet if you take the ignition cylinder off the column and get a good look at it there is a way to remove the lock lever completely, and drive the truck but just not have the wheel lock feature.

You might try removing the air bag off the steering wheel and taking out the clockspring to be sure it's not bound up causing the steering wheel not to turn. Put the wheel back on its spindle temporarily and see if it will turn. I have never seen or heard of this happening, but I think this problem sounds like the ignition lock lever is broken, though.

I had the very same problem with a 01 Dodge
Minivan, DGMAN. My better half had just driven
the van to a store. When she retuned to head back
home the key would not turn.

To make a long story short, the van had to be
towed (thanks to AAA). The Ign switch assy was
replaced.
