Subject: Pls help Rear Clunking
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 dakota QC 4.7 4x4 with LSD. Everytime I turn a corner I get a clunking sound from the rear of the truck. In trying to fix the problem I have replaced rear stabilizer bushings, links and shocks. The problem did not go away at all. When I turn the corner one way it will clunk, but will not clunk again until I turn the other way. With the truck jacked up I can pull/push on the tire and there is some play in there. Could this be the problem, or is this normal? Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

That play is normal. The clunking you most likely hear is the side-to-side movement of the axles...also normal. You can check the fluid level of the differential. If it is a bit low you can top it off. This MAY quiet it some. My `95 has made noise for years (I bought it new). While sitting in the garage I can shake the back of my rig, side-to-side and here a distinct 'metal' clunk from each axle end...again, done it for years. maybe I should fill/ change my diff fluids? naw, barely has 125K on it...

Some play is normal. It is possible to have too much play.
