Message:
Hi, I have always owned 5.2LT v-8 engines with no complaints and getting a ton of miles out of them. I am looking at a 4.7LT right now. I hear a lot of bad things about these engines. I hear these motors quitting from 30,000 to 150,000 miles, always the same thing oiling system problems. And I hear these are people changing there oil on a regular basis, Is there a glich in these engines? Are they hit and miss for a good one that lasts? All comments would be great to help me to decide to stay away or not. And I want to ask also, If a motor has run on standard motor oil and it has 100,000 miles on it, is it safe to switch to fully synthetic, and is it really better at this point? Thanks everyone!

2000 Dakota 2WD - 4.7 - 94,000 miles

No internal engine problems at all, just two external issues. One O2 sensor threw a code - replaced, no problem since. Cleaned the IAC at 90,000 miles due to rough idle. Problem solved. Oil always changed every 3,000 miles with Valvoline 10W-30 and a new Purolater filter. As far as synthetic, I see no reason to start spending more on oil changes now if conventional oil has worked for this long. I always check the oil level before changing the oil, and there is no noticeable drop in the level from when I did it the last time.

nothing but routine/scheduled maintenance since I bought it with 45k miles. Oil, plugs (no wires since it's distributorless), tires, diff, tranny, etc. I do alot of off-pavement driving and have replaced shocks.

Had my 4.7 since '00, still running great. Been at this site most of that time too, noticing what problems come up with these trucks - and I haven't heard what you say you are hearing.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

When I had my 02 4.7 (just sold it) it gave me
zero problems engine wise.

I must admit tho, the 5.2 (318) is by far a better
built work horse when it comes to pulling heavy
loads like travel trailors.

I had both the 4.7 and the 5.2 in Dakotas and
hands down, the 5.2 was a better engine in the
LONG haul.

IF you feed that whole drive train the right fluids at the right intervals you will have zero problems there. If you'll be spending money and I had to polish the old crystal ball of and guess where, I'd say it's on the front end. Some people will tell you they have no problems in this area, others will tell you their trucks chew up front suspension and brake components and spit them out like gristle.

Whatever you're looking at, listen and feel carefully for squeaks, clunks, wobbles, or any sloppiness from any where in the front suspension or steering shaft.

eddy seems to know what he's talking about..
He's right about the front end problems Dakota's
have had/now have. Seems to be a bit weak.

Like I said in my first reply, "When I had my 02
4.7 (just sold it) it gave me zero problems
engine wise." I didn't say anything about some
of the other problems I had. Nothing major either.

The ONLY thing I never trusted was the tranny and
the way it shifted from time to time.

I have a 2000 Dak. QC 4x4 with the 4.7. I had 270 000 km ( roughly 160 000 miles ) on my engine before I had it rebuilt about 5000 miles ago. The only reason I rebuilt the motor was because it blew a head gasket, and I figured that with the high mileage I might as well invest in a rebuild rather than have something else go wrong six months to a year down the road, and the money i would have spent would have been wasted.
