Subject: Run 4.7 Without AC Compressor?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 4.7 Dak that the compressor/clutch just went out on. I would like to be able to drive it TEMPORARILY w/o the compressor. Is this possible w/ a shorter belt or is there a pulley that has to be put in place (ie to replace the compressor pulley)? How did the non-ac Daks come?

Any help is appreciated!

Robert, I didn't have the a/c compressor when I bought mine, but I used an idler from a 1977 Ford thunderbird, and it works fine, I did however have to also use a shorter belt. I haven't looked at anything as new as yours, but if you were to try to just use the shorter belt it would probably hit against the water pump, or something else. That was why I needed to use an idler, as for a non-a/c Dakota, I don't know if Dodge even built such a thing. Maybe with the older ones like mine, but I just happen to find that a '77 Thunderbird idler would work. I use to do a lot of junk yard crawls and was looking for something else when I found a Ford and when I saw it,I thought gee, that just might work so I took it off, and sure enough it worked for me. I don't remember what they charged me, but I know it couldn't have been more than a few bucks at the most.
I hope that helps.
Good Luck

All 4.7's came with AC. I looked at running a shorter belt but could not find one. dakota49 has an interesting idea with replacing the compressor with an idler pulley.

Does your compressor pulley not spin? If it does, why not leave the compressor in place instead of swapping pulleys or using a shorter belt?

No, the pulley does not spin. I either have to replace it or run w/o it. I guess I'm going to end up replacing it.
