Well gals and gents, I finally got my 02 4X4, 4.7
Sport sold. It was a VERY VERY hard unit to get
rid of all because of fuel prices.

I'm done with new trucks of any make and model.
If and when I buy another truck, big or small, it
will be a much older unit I can work on.

My Dakota never left me down BUT is didn't really
trust it either. The posts I've read on this
site about all sorts of problems kinda makes you
wonder if you should travel far with your truck.

It's now gone. I got $8250.00 out of it with
46848 K on the spedo. Kelly Blue Book listed it at
$9500.00 private sale. I feel VERY lucky I got
what I did out of it.

You all, have a good one! ;)

good deal on the sale. Congrats.

I also have an 02 4x4 4.7L. Mine has never let down and I do trust it. until I got my car (better gas milage) I was driving it on my work commute of 50 miles day. I drove it from Atlanta GA to Gatlinburg TN area a few weeks ago and drove around the smokies (L gear with a flowmaster rocks! - nice always present tone). I also do regular trips to north GA mountains driving on GA WMA/USFS lands - rough, out of the way roads. Some trips I never see another vehicle in the area (5 miles) of where I am fishing. In some areas I don't have cell service.

Also, being cautious and I think smart, I carry most everything I would need should I run into an issue with myself or happen upsomeone in need- extra oil, filter, basic tools, axe, shovel, first aid kit, air compressor, tire repair, etc in my tool box. I directed a couple of mountain bikers out once who was lost and confused (couldn't read a map!)

Just curious, what was it that you didn't trust about your dakota?

I'm wondering the same thing. I still trust my '00, hasn't let me down yet - and it's seen some hard use. Seems pretty normal to see posts about problems at a site were people come for solutions; that doesn't make me expect my truck to give up.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

The thing I didn't trust the most was the tranny.
I never liked the way it sometimes jerked into
the next gear.

The thing I hated the most about it was the way
the computer takes control over taking the tranny
in and out of OD while on a nice level highway.
As soon as you start to go up any kind of hill
at all, you're out of OD. So, the gas you *think*
you saved is lost because the engine is back up to
3000 + RPM again. I told my wife, I'll NEVER buy
another auto tranny truck again and I still mean
that.

I like older cars and trucks. Todays units all
look the same. I also like the idea I can open
the hood and *I* can fix this thing myself
without *speacial* tools.

Have a great one guys...

I think you had an isolated issue that needed addressed.

no vehicle should shift in/out of OD like that on a level surface. Mine doesn't even do that on long low grade hills.

Manuals are nice in some situations. I would have to shift that much - I have to deal with Atlanta traffic.
