Subject: easy 5v switched power under hood

Message:
I seem to have misplaced my haynes manual. Can anyone tell me where I can find an easy 5v switched power feed under the hood?

I'm adding some aux lights with a relay and want the power to be switched.

Or, I'm not too good with electrical stuff - if I use a light switch that is not illuminated, how much current will it always draw (do i run the risk of running my battery down) if I use a constant 5V so I can turn the aux lights on without turning the key on?

5 volt supply??? The systems main power is 12
volts... Reading your thread, Dan M, you want to
turn your added lights on via a relay under the
hood. Good idea.. You need a relay that is
switched on with a 12 volt coil, not 5..

Very easy to do.. Good luck

Yes, the relay will be 12V and direct to the battery, however, the switch inside the cab will be 5v switched (maybe constant).

I have a few decisions to make about the switch in the cab.

Dan, I'm not sure why you want to use 5volts, but the best way is like you are planning use a relay under the hood. If I were you I would use an ignition hot (meaning it is only on when the key is) that way you wouldn't need to have constant power to it. And I would use a 12 volt supply to the relay and switch. Just an idea.
Good Luck

I don't believe there is a 5 volt circuit that you can tap into in your Dakota. Even if there were you would run the risk of damage to that circuit and component. Any low voltage component or circuit in a 12 volt truck would be really sensitive to any other circuit connected to it. There probably are some 5 volt parts in the CTM or PCM but it is not a good idea to tap into those.

A switch, illuminated or not will draw no power and will pull no current when in the off position. An illuminated switch like a rocker or toggle switch will draw very minimal current, based on the value of the bulb used to light it up, but only when it is in the on position.

You can do as Daddio suggested and use ignition 12 volts to power your lights. You could also use the parking lamp circuit to trigger a plain old Bosch 30amp relay to switch battery positive voltage to the new lights. You could also put a toggle switch in series on one side or the other of the coil on the relay so you could turn the lights on and off independently from the parking/headlights.

If you really wanted to do it correctly you could wire in a second relay to interrupt the ground to the one that is connected to the parking light wire so that the aux lights will turn off when the high beams are on. Some will say they would rather not have it that way but at least here where I live it is illegal to run driving/fog lights and high beams at the same time unless you are off-road. That's why Dodge wires the factory fog lights to turn off when high beams are on. It keeps everything 50-state legal.

There are any number of ways to wire auxilliary lights in a truck. You need a good working knowledge of relays and electrical wiring to do it correctly and safely though. I personally have never seen a set of 5 volt aux lights.

Correction, that was Dakota49 who suggested using ignition power not Daddio. Sorry..

Thanks for clearing up the confusion for the 5v power to the switch.

I have factory fog lights already, I'm going to add 2 or 3 sets of aux lighting ... 1 set 100w forward and 1 set 55w backward - maybe another set of 55w forward too.

I found a 4 bay fuse block (max 30amp per circuit) to wire everything under the hood neatly. I'm still looking for a multibay relay block. I know summit racing has some, haven't looked at all the details yet. I just need to find a multi switch block as well - I've only see 2 position ones thus far.

I am still thinking about how to wire the 2 sets of lights. I think i'll do both constant volt and if i go with 55w forward i'll wire those to switched power for key-on only.

Right now I'm thinking the backward lights will be square and mount under the bumper on the frame. I'm going to mount the 100w forward (and 55w foward too if i go that route) on my yakima rack on my leer shell.

this will all make my dakota really stand out. All i need now is the rancho lift. Someone want to give me $1600? lol

Just a side note .... in most states its illegal to install AUX lights facing backwards .. check your local laws
