 Subject: steering shaft/coupling

ok every once in a while i check my steering shaft and couplings just to see that there tight and just now the steering coupling is getting play. (looks like a u joint on a driveshaft)
but anyways i need to replace this and its killing me to where to find a replacement steering shaft for a dakota. i have no problem finding them for jeeps and broncos... ugh!
any suggestions would be great or if somebody can piont me in the right direction.

(and yes a gearbox)

the "rag joint" would be on the end of the steering shaft that attachs it to the gear box. the "rag joints" usually wear out before the u-joints do.

only if it were the case. i can assure you its the u joint right under the brake booster thats getting play. not much but its going to only get worse. so im just trying to get a jump on it.
but i cant find anybody that haas one. UGH

could be a dealer item only. have you tried www.car-part.com? it can search salvage yards across the U.S. and Canada.

Buy a used part and get the same pos as you are trying to replace. Smart move daddio!

brianj, if you can get it apart you could try going to a tractor shop like a John Deere, or some place like that and they have all sizes of U joints. Just an idea.

thats a good idea my serch has changed from replacing the shaft to just find the u joint to fix it.
ill see if i can make a few calls annd see if they would have some.
