Subject: Truck won't start?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just installed some fatmat in my truck, I had the doors open and forgot to turn the dome light switch off.

So my battery died, no big deal, I got a set of jumper cables jumped started it.

I had to give it some gas to get it to fire up, and then I had to keep giving it gas in order to keep it running. Weird....

I unhooked the cables and it will crank over, so I know the battery is charged and holding a charge.

What should I do?

I don't want to have to pay to have it towed somewhere to find out it was something simple that I can fix myself for cheap.

Any help is appreciated.

Fatmat is just like dynamat, I only installed it in the cab though, not under the hood or anything like that. I will check the gas pedal linkage in the morning, because I did pull the carpet out an could have moved the linkage.

The truck will turn over and really try to start, but if I don't give it gas it dies. And if I give it gas and then quit giving gas, it dies.

It's dang hard to give the engine gas and shift into drive, lol. Kinda puts a damper on my holiday weekend plans too.

It's gotta be something in the fuel pump,CluCool.
Either no power going to the pump or for some
reason, it went bad..

Check to see if you have fuel at the injectors
when you turn the key on. If you do, fuel pump
is more than likely ok. Head for the crank
sensor (timing) next..

Good luck..

take your battery to get load tested. the first sign of a weak battery is loss of idle memory. the truck will start fine but will not idle on it's own. this is coming from first hand experience.

Yup, go with dadio's advice. That's what I saw the first time my battery went bad as well. The second time (just this weekend) I noticed very slightly slower cranking for a couple days. Then it wouldn't hold an idle again, even with a jumper pack. It should have had plenty of time to bounce back as I kept it revved up for a while, so I figured it must have developed a short in one of the cells. A fresh battery cured it. If your battery passes the load test - with a proper charge, you may just have to keep it revved up a little until it relearns the idle memory.

Thank you guys so much, You nailed it daddio and Kowalski. All I did was take my battery in and have it checked, it was bad. I bought an optima red top and the truck runs like a champ.

Good post daddio. Did you think of the question and answer yourself. Then you get the pot stirrer kowalski in on it. I hope you don't break your arm patting yourself on the back.

Aw, is someone upset it wasn't a different problem ? When a problem seems linked to a discharged battery, that's the first thing that should be checked. Call me a pot stirrer if you will; but at least I have the stones to post under my usual screen name ;-)

The way I read CluCool's first thread was, he had
to keep giving it gas to keep it running. I took
that as, pouring gas into the air intake to keep
it running. Now I see it must have been holding
the *gas* peddle down a bit keeping the engine at
a higher rev(RPM)than normal.

See what happeneds when the problem is miss read
or twisted a bit.

In the *old* days, "giving it gas" using the *gas*
peddle was *pumping* the peddle to *force* gas
into the intake from the *old* carbs.

Glad to see your problem is fixed, CluCool.

Can't pump the gas with the pedal with a fuel injected motor. No carb also means no accelerator pump.

have a good day.

Since when did daddio and Kowalski become idiots? i have been using this site on and off for 8 years now and never had any problems with them. I would definitely not call them idiots by any means. Maybe I am just out of the loop.

Thanks for the help by those who helped.
