Can anyone tell me if there is a procedure written anywhere for how to go about changing the plugs and doing a tune up on my 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7 V-8? I mean, I've never tried to change plugs on an engine like this where each plug has a coil. It looks like I need to take some stuff off to get to them but I don't want to guess at it.
I get 13 miles per in the city, 17 on the highway...and I need help improving that.

Changing the plugs and a clean air filter is pretty much all you can do to it. The "tuneup" of the past no longer applies to the 4.7L.
As for spark plugs, here's some info I've collected. STOCK is the same heat range as what the factory put in. COOLER is one step cooler than STOCK.

NGK V-Power
STOCK: ZFR6F-11G(6987)
COOLER: ZFR5F-11(2262)

Autolite
STOCK: 3923
COOLER: 3922??

Champion Truck
STOCK: 4071
COOLER: 3344

Also, stock spark plug gap is .04 inch. I get a couple mpg better if I open the gap to .045. I've heard of people using non-resistor plugs in the 4.7. I haven't, but those who do say it's good for a slight mileage increase.

Replacing the plugs is easy.

You have to remove the air intake stuff that goes from the air cleaner to the throttle body. It's just a couple large hose clamps and mounting bolts.

Each coil is secured with a small bolt. Remove the bolt, remove the electrical plug, and the coil should pull straight up off the spark plug. Gently twist it back and forth to ease removal.

Use compressed air to blow out the hole so as not to get any junk down inside the cylinder.

Remove the spark plug in the normal fashion. Gap and install the new plug. Repeat for the other 7 cylinders.

Put everything back together. Except that my mileage didn't get better after doing this. I still get pretty good mileage on trips, but around town is terrible. Too much sitting at red lights and having to get up to speed only to slow back down and stop again.

Important tip: torque the plugs to 20 ft/lbs max.

Important tip: use anti-seize on the threads.

Also, get a 5" spark plug socket. The plug is so deep in the hole that it is nearly impossible (for me) to get out a normal length short socket after tightening down the plug.

The socket sticks to the plug and the extension pulls out leaving it too far down to grab with pliers. With the longer socket the top is exposed and easily grasped with pliers.

What's your left foot doing?
