Greetings all
Im a fellow who just purchased and old Dakota 4X4
Short box and have a few questions that perhaps you good folks could answer.

The O/D operates erraticly and seemingly requires many miles of warm up driving before it deigns to kick in. On occasion when its in I believe the lockup torque converter has an issue as it makes the vehicle "hiccup" steadily until enough throttle pressure is applied to force a downshift or disengage of the lockup.
the vehicle has the 5.2 liter .
any help or adice is greatly appreciated as well as a scan of an applicable wiring diagram for the tranny controls
THANK SO MUCH
PK

If your engine temperature is normal, the computer should allow the O/D and lockup to engage. What I found sometimes causes your symptoms is that the solenoids mounted on the right side of the valve body (for O/D and lockup) vibrate loose. Three screws and a gasket hold it to the valve body. If loose, fluid leaks around the check valve and prevents O/D from engaging. You can drop the tranny pan and tighten the screws. But first check the 3-wire electrical plug at the left rear corner of the tranny to make sure it's clean and tight.

http://www.berrysprinter.com/e-fiche/model%20years/CD1/81-96/90t.PDF page 792 (section 21A-1700), item 3 shows the solenoid pack with its wiring harness. It screws to the right-hand side of valve body inside the pan, and harness exits the tranny case at left rear.

I had problems with my `95 and it turned out to be just low tranny servicing. It was less than a quart low, but that was all it took. Good luck.
