I have a "non flex fuel" 2003 QuadCab. Can I run the E85 fuel?

I read somewhere that using E85 in a non flexfuel vehicle can cause corrosion on both metal and rubber parts.

correct, and might i add that your MPG will drop also.

The MPG drop effectively makes the cost of E85 the same as gasoline - if you also factor in the fact that food is more expensive because farmers are growing fuel, not food.

Adding alcohol to gasoline has never been a good idea.

Just got back from vacation, and in TN they had many stations showing that their fuel had 10% ethanol. The 2005 PT Cruiser did not like this stuff. It's not a flex-fueler, so I'm not surprised, but it was a bit more tempermental than I expected. Mileage dropped to 20mpg, down from the usual 25ish (yes, it's a pig). The car experienced the first detonation I've ever noticed, where before, even in the hottest conditions, it's never done this on 87 octane pure gas. By the third tank, I had an oil pressure indicator and the fuel gauge froze. Finally managed to scope out some non-ethanol spiked stations, ran a couple tanks through and the oil light went off, gauge began working normally again. Weird. Considering the mileage dropoff, I can't even say 10% ethanol is cheaper once you do the math. I don't even wanna think about E85. And yes, the alcohol will damage fuel system components intended for gasoline-only. I would think that as long as some gas is present, the corrosive effects would be slowed greatly, but I'd hate to test that. Until they start making ethanol out of non-food source materials like switchgrass (which they can do now, but won't...wonder why that is? Think about it.), which grows well in poor soil, I really wish they'd lay off the ethanol from food. However, I hear Brazil really wants to sell their sugarcane-based ethanol to us. Too bad our gov't. won't play ball. The tariffs on it are so high, to protect our oil industry, there's no cost savings for us. Brazil got into ethanol a few years ago. Their flex-fuelers run equally well on gas/ethanol/methanol. One small Ford model actually makes a bit MORE power on ethanol than gas. Now here we are, gas prices killing us and all we can do is run around, yankin' our dicks while the oil barons rake it in. Your government at work for you. Yeah, right.
Hey, here's athought. Since oil comes from dead plants an animals, crushed and cooked in Mother Nature's crock pot, isn't it the ultimate biofuel?

Are the gas stations required to have notices on the pump saying they have ethanol in their fuel? I unwittingly bought about 14 gallons yesterday at a Sunoco and noticed the sticker on the pump saying "contains up to 10% ethanol". I never let my tank get below 1/4. I always use quality gas, either Chevron/Texaco or Sunoco. This was the first gas station I have seen with the 10% ethanol sticker on the pump. I just wonder if the stations that dont have the sticker are pumping that crap too and just not telling us about it. And I really hope it doesn't ruin my fuel system or other parts in my Dakota.

And why if it was ethanol was it still $3.89 a gallon? I thought ethanol was supposed to make it cheaper. I am not a very political person but I agree with Gen1Dak 110%. The oil companies, the people in the Middle East, OPEC, Bush and all his oil business buddies really screwed us all on gas. Bush really doesn't care, he will just go back into his oil business when his term is over. It seems to me like if someone on Wall Street cuts a loud fart after eating a chili dog for lunch, the oil and gas prices go up. The economy is bad now, but what will it be like when none of us can afford to leave the house to go to work? There won't be an economy then because we will all be broke, so I guess we won't need gas then either.

Jimmy

What JR said...except it's 90% gasoline and 10% ethanol. This stuff isn't supposed to hurt our vehicles (compared to E-85 which will destroy the rubber hoses and such)...but I did notice a slight drop in mileage. I made a 1000 mile trip back in April and all the gas stations I stopped at in IL contained 10% ethanol (all the pumps were marked stating that as well)...once in IL, my mileage dropped very slightly, but enough to notice it when calculating my mileage up...the price for it was also no cheaper than gasoline containing NO ethanol. So in reality, I was paying MORE per mile...I agree with the rest of you...we're getting buttphucked.

I would think they would be required to list the ethanol content. In Tennessee, the 10% ethanol was typically about 8-15 cents (8 cents in Pigeon Forge, 15 cents in Gatlinburg...everything costs more in G'Burg) less than straight gas, so that's how I found the non-ethanol stations from a distance, then would look for the ethanol stickers on the pumps, just to be sure.

if ethanol content is under 10% they post have to post it in the pumps. 10% and over has to be advertised on the pump. they've been using 10% since at least the early 80's.

if ethanol content is under 10% they don't have to post it.

"So how much Ethenol are we useing at the pump today? 10%?"

that depends. could be anywhere from 5-9% without you knowing. i've filled up at different stations before and could smell ethanol in the fuel but nothing posted on the pumps.

I just wrote a letter to my senators, and congressman and let them know I am not going to vote for them unless they let oil companies start drilling for oil here, on shore and off. I suggest you do the same. If you don't tell them they won't know. Ok, the probably will and just ignore us, but I feel like I at least tried anyway.

Did they not inform us about the down side of Ethenol? Does it not take 2 gallons of Ethenol to equal 1 gallon of pure gasoline.

So there goes your fuel millage also. I've noticed a bit of a drop since the oil companies are useing more of the corn fuel.

Just more money in there pocket book.

Wow, I can't believe the misguided comments I read about ethanol here! No, it does not take 2 gallons of ethanol to equal a gallon of gas, no it does not eat your plastic and metal in your engine and no 10% ethanol, which someone stated has been in our gas for years, does not make your fuel economy go down 5-10 mpg. As for it takes gas to make ethanol..not if the fleet producing it is running on ethanol. Besides that, how much 'gas' do you think it takes to ship oil thousands of miles from Saudi Arabia? If you want 'pure gas' get ready to sign up for more wars and funding terrorist countries that hate the USA. Think about things before looking for someone to complain to about a issue that you don't seem to understand.
Bottom line to the original post...of course you can without 'modifications'. The computer will adjust the fuel/air mixture.

E85 WILL damage systems not made for it. It will attack rubber parts that can survive 10% ethanol. 10% ethanol can drop your gas mileage by 5%, not 5 mpg. It has less energy content than gasoline.

And you are answering a 3-year old post.
