I went to order a 2008 and they stopped production on May 4th. Anyone know what if any changes are in store for next year ? If you were ordering a new truck, what options would you consider a must ?

Thanks

1. Gotta look a whole lot less ugly than the 2008 model.
2. 4x4, depending on where you live and the truck's intended use.
2.a. MANUAL LOCKING FREE-WHEELING FRONT HUBS
3. 3.9 or 4.1 diff ratio
4. Automatic transmission
5. Stability control
6. Sun visors long enough, so that when you rotate them to block the sun coming in the left side, they cover the entire front-to-back length of the glass.

If you want a manual tranny you're gonna be stuck with a V6. Unless DC sources a manual tranny that will have a high enough input TQ rating to accommodate the V8's power.

I can't imagine myself driving a 4x4 QC with a V6. I've driven two 4x2 QCs with a V6 (3.9 and 3.7) and hated it...

all of my vehicles must have auto dimming rear view mirror and fog lights!

The overhead console with garage remote is a nice feature if you have a garage.

tow hooks are nice on a truck, I had some custom ones for my 02 installed since the factory didn't deem it necessary to make any.

i like my skid plates too - but i do a lot of off road driving where they come in handy :)

I like my heavy duty service group (tranny cooler) and the tow package.

love the remote start in my car, now standard on 08 dakotas i think.

optional (larger) gas tank.

they need to put the light under the hood back in there, it's a nice feature when you need to look under the hood at night.

It also would be nice to get better gas mileage
with the V6 and V8.

How about a two speed rear end? Just like the
BIG trucks have...

How about a radio-controlled "SHUT THE F@CK UP" button that turns on a cell phone jammer.

FYI, 2009s will not go into production until January due to the retooling for the new RAMs. Doesn't seem like Dodge really promotes their Dakota line very well. Very few on lots in So Cal. Thanks for the options suggestions.

They need to offer the manual transmission in conjunction with a choice of axle gearing. My 2008 is a slug with its 3.21 gears (the only ratio offered with the standard-shift transmission). Heavy truck + weak V6 + 3.21 gears = slow truck and decreased clutch life.

Putting some storage bins under the rear seats in the Club Cab would be nice. Eliminating the annoying delay in the headlight dimmer/flash and in the ignition at startup would be nice.

And how about some ball joints with grease fittings on them, that's a novel idea.

And what happened to rear side windows that open? My base model '97 had them. They don't open on the '08 model.

i actually relly like them myself. im dying to drive one.

the only complaint i have is that the "off road" package seems a little to low for my taking.

Yeah they have the same ride height for 4x4 and 2x4.. really sucks but I suppose it's supposed they did it to cut costs.

To Modain,
The current 6-speed Getrag will handle the V8's torque. It is available in the Ram. I test drove a RC Ram w/4.7 & 6-speed. It would burn rubber in the first three gears!
When Dodge stopped offering that combo in the Dakota, I stopped looking at new Dakotas.

That's good news. It would appear from what the Dodge website shows that the tranny is a G-56 (Mercedes built) - the same one used behind the 5.7L and diesel engines (Ram 2500 & 3500). This tranny can handle a boatload of TQ.

Not being able to find out for sure, I base this upon the features showing the manual tranny has a 6.29 1st gear ratio. The G-238 (which is used in the Dakota) has a 4.23 1st gear and I suspect isn't used in the Ram 1500. Too bad if this is the case...

The 4.7L Ram 1500 uses the same G238 built by Getrag in Untengruppenbach that is in my Dakota. I base this on Mopar parts.com.
I have been looking for a Ram 2500 w/Hemi & 6-speed for 3 years to test drive. No dealers within 350 miles ever have one. I don't think I would like that 6.29 first gear ratio. First gear in my Dakota is too high unless I'm pulling a loaded trailer or street racing.

Oh yeah, according to the Aug. Motor Trend, the next Dakota may be built at the Nissan Frontier plant in Smyrna, TN. (which will mean no more V8's). The 2010 Titan will be a Mexican built Ram.

Well if Nissan is going to build a truck for Chrysler, then I'm own my way to the GM dealer and just have to settle for a inline 5 in there Colorado.

no quite the contrary. ok now im pretty sure about this, and yes i did do reserch. and i did see it on the news. so this is whars happening.

dodge and nissan made a deal since there both struggling right now that would be cost efficient.

dodge is going to start building nissans mid size pickup. and in return nissan is building dodge a compact on the versa platform. so theres soon to be a nissan dakota if you will. and a dodge versa.

so dont worry STS you can keep your dodge. and im actually looking forward to this new prouduct. might be a nasty V6 in the new dakota for the years to come.

Nissan makes some a great midsize truck but not on the scale of the Dakotas power and ride comfort.
