2000 Dakota CC,With the tailgate down,how much weight will it hold without breaking? Say if i was loading something up onto it with a ramp.

We helped load a large old safe into a heap of junk S-10 a couple years ago (they got permission to take it--the safe--to a scrap yard). That safe weighed well over a thousand pounds, probably closer to a ton. We tipped the safe down onto the guys tailgate and then it took four of us and a hydraulic jack to lift it up to the point where we could slide it in. At that point, a fifth guy from down the road joined us (and this dude was BUILT) and with all of us we were able to slide the safe into the bed. The truck was bottomed out so bad, those of us who were just helping and had no ties to the guys in the truck wondered if they'd actually get to the scrap yard before the dude snapped his leaf springs, axle or something else.
In other words...if that dude's tailgate could handle a large safe, I think you're pretty safe with about anything your truck bed is rated to hold. Most of the weight on the end of the tailgate is put on the cables and I would guess their break strength is over a couple thousand pounds (just a guess).

if the cables are worn at all they could snap. i snapped mine when we loaded a bombardier outlander 800 into the back of my truck. the tailgate has been fukked ever since.

I moved my hot tub from the sunporch to the deck last weekend. It weights about 680 lbs empty. Tilted it up on the tailgate and that poor tailgate bent like a tin can. Good news is, there are a bunch of tailgates on ebay for around $200. :o)
