I have a 01 d.d. q.c. 2x4 with a 4.7 and I have new struts I want to swap in and started to loosen the top nut and noticed the whole shaft was spinning do I need a special tool to hold the bolt or a pair of vice grips is my only choice. on a side note just added a 20" glass pack with a 18"x4" tip very nice sound

Dakotas don't have struts, they have shocks. There is a tool made, but just use vise grips on the old ones to get them out.

the tool i used is called an pnuematic impact wrench. it spins the nut fast enough it'll come right off.

ok I finally got them off right one came off with a pneumatic fairly easy. Left on the other hand I had to cut off the top and then one of the bottoms sheared off and the bottom nuts are welded on so I had to drill threw it and then put a new nut and bolt in. What pain but the old shocks i could compress with my hands
