Subject: Synthetic oil bad for older engines?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 94 Dak with 161k miles. I finally replaced the intake with the M1 so I can stop burning oil. I would like to go with synthetic oil, but many people are telling me it's bad for an older engine. They say it will suddenly become a leaker.

Well, that all sounds like an old wive's tale to me so I thought I'd ask you guys what you think.

It's bogus. I have switched back and forth on an engine that now has 287K miles. The first 130K I ran dino, then 100K on synthetic, then alternating as the mood strikes me. I find zero difference in oil consumption. Gas mileage changes so little it's not worth the double cost of synthetic for that reason. It might be worth it to you for longevity and easier cold starting.

The reason the old wives tale persists is because someone decided to make the switch to synthetic. The synthetic got in there and started cleaning the engine deposits out, revealing just how worn out that engine was, so sure, it became a leaker. Going back to conventional oil stopped or slowed the leaks because it started coking everything back up again. So, if you do the swap and it starts leaking, you need to go back to non-synthetic to squeeze a few more miles out, or get it rebuilt.
