Subject: glass shatters by itself

I have a 2002 2-door Dakota SLT+ extended cab with 4x4, and I yesterday found the passenger side rear flip-open window completely destroyed. I couldn't find any rocks or anything else inside the truck. The glass was about 50-50 inside and outside the truck, the biggest pieces were inside. Someone could have hit it with a hammer, I don't know exactly what happened. I've heard that glass can suddenly implode and shatter by itself. Has this happened to anybody else? I've driving for 40 years and never saw this before. Thanks for sharing information with me. My next post, I will talk about my brake master cylinder problem, which brake shops don't have any answer for - the pedal has too much play now. When it was new, the pedal felt crisp and firm - - now it travels almost down to the floor and feels soft. I replace the power brake booster, a re-built, and it made no difference. Never had a brake problem like this that the shops don't know what is happening! Thanks everyone!

I've heard that can happen from heat, but never seen it personally. EMTs use a tool like a spring loaded center punch for gaining fast access to a vehicle; I've seen those used and that would leave the glass as you described. Just a possibility.

The brake shop guy said it was the power brake booster causing the low pedal. So, I replaced it for $300 - - it was a re-built one, too - - they said they couldn't get a new one for a Dakota anywhere. After the booster was installed, it, you gussed it, made no difference in the brake pedal at all. I just wondered if anybody else has had this sorry issue. The only thing it could be is the master cylinder, when I change it, I'll try and find an aftermarket one which actually has quality. Dodge uses cheap stuff: The front shocks had to be replaced last month, losing all the oil out of them, and they only had 20K miles. 2002 Dakotas and Durangos had front wheels falling off a few years back, and were factory-recalled to replace upper ball joints. The Dakota master cylinder probably has an internal pressure leak, since no brake fluid is lost. Gimme a break! All this really sucks. Finding out about Chrysler only after you buy one. Thanks for any more comments and/or snide remarks. Yours truly, SS-Sturmscharfuhrer Phillip Jones.

My '00 Dak had that recall too. My originals were fine when replaced, and the replacements have held up to heavy duty use quite well - I'd say you can quit worrying about that. You think mopar is the only major manufacturer that looks for cheap part sources ? Or issues recalls ? Many of us have found our mopars to be quite reliable. There is something else that could cause the soft pedal; but with your anti mopar attitude and a signature that makes you sound like a skinhead - you'll need to find that advice from someone else. Could be the cause no matter what brand we are discussing. Suffice it to say, you may not know what you think you know. And perhaps the broken window has something to do with your politics ? Thanks for shedding a bit more light on that subject.

As for the window sounds to me like someone tried to break-in with a screwdriver and popped the window. most people leave the pop-out window latch half open and thieves slide a screwdriver between the gasket and glass trying to open the window so they can reach in to lift the door lock. Have you checked your rear brakes? are they adjusted up? unadjusted drums will give a long pedal travel. anybody bleed them?

hey Kowalski couldnt of said it better myself. dont you just love it that when something goes wrong with there car they always blame the manufacture? some people are very ignorant.

and half of the things that go wrong are usually maintnence. "oh my car is crap i had to replace the shocks" well, depending on hudreds of variables 20k just might be a good deal. you never know.

had to replace the shocks and the brakes went bad sounds like oh......... maybe the driver? and someone broke into your car? maybe from wreckless driving?... lol. how about that theory?

On the glass shattering thing, it happens. Middle of the day, truck in the shade. All the glass was on the outside right? The only glass left on the truck was around the hinge points and the latch. Heard a loud pop, walked to the front of the house and all the glass was in the street as much as 15 feet from the truck. Hardly had to clean any out of the truck . Still don't get it...

OK, after I've been dragged across the coals by everybody, I finally found out what actually did happen to my Dakota: the gardener did it - - and he didn't know about it. He did it with a weed eater. He goes by the truck every time, trimming the parkway and hit the glass with the heavy top of the weed eater. He didn't know it because of the noise the weed eater makes, just passed right by it. I had given myself that rank because I thought nobody would know what it is. What rank is it equivalent to in the U.S. Army? Everybody is right about Mopar - - they are actually probably better than the others, because I have heard that Mopar has in fact had fewer recalls. OK, thanks, now I know more about that truck.

What army are you in, that you are wondering about an equivalent rank ?
And what country allows you to give yourself your rank ?

Phillip Jones - you have not been "dragged across the coals" here. You were correctly identified as a skinhead after requesting "any more comments and/or snide remarks". Since you didn't answer Kowalski's questions, I googled the info. SS Sturmscharfuhrer seems to denote an Italian volunteer, loyal to the reich in the evil axis. Not any specific rank. A nazi by any other name is still a nazi. What we would call someone equal in the U.S. Army would be traitor !

If you are going to proudly portray yourself as a member of a group who practiced genocide as ethnic cleansing, the least you could do is stand up and accept being identified like a man. You are nothing but a coward and a little boy in a man's body.

My apologies, and I mean that. You're right, the name shouldn't even be mentioned anywhere, no matter how old it gets. I understand that now. It won't happen again.

Good for you for manning up. It sounds like you understand better why even though what you identified with happened long ago; many find that kind of hatred offensive. I don't have a big problem with prejudice - I prejudge everyone I meet. That's why they say first impressions are important. But I believe out and out racism is wrong. In case "parts manager's" tip didn't find a solution, one more thing to check would be a soft spot in one of the rubber lines by the brakes. Good luck with your problem, let us know how you make out.
