Subject: Anyone else loose Hp due to AC
IP: Logged

Message:
It seems that when I run my A/C on my 1990 3.9L Dak, I loose alot of power. Living in South Fla, I use the AC alot this time of year. I run 31's and on a recent trip, one way I used ac and my truck kept down shifting to keep up a approx. 65-70 MPH speed. Headed home with no ac, truck ran like a gem, even had plenty of passing power above my running 65-70mph. Any light weight pullies for 1990 Daks out there? Need em bad I guess.

You do loose power while running the A/C, whether you feel it or not. I cannot feel it in my Dak, nor in my Sebring, but it's there. The A/C is a pump; it pumps gas (Freon) through your system. The condenser, accumulator, etc. Since it has to pump that gas (at a given pressure) through the system, it needs power, hence the power loss.

Did you loose power before while running the A/C? If you didn't, then something might be wrong with the compressor (more than liekly) or somewhere else in the system. I wouldn't think that would happen at highway speeds, even in Death Valley. You should feel a power loss, but enough to cause you to shift in and out of o/d, unless you are hill climbing. But since I use to live in FL, I know that isn't true.
What tire size did you have before the 31's? Did you change the gears? Those can actually have a big impact on how the truck runs. Sure it might be fine without A/C, but together it may drag you down.

IMHO

The only thing I can think of is that the engine computer sets it self up for the power loss. This way you're a little higher up one the power curve. But I really don't know why. I've never see that before. Just to the fact that my Sebring goes to 800rpm or so then back down to it's normal idle when I turn the A/C on.

My Dak had 215x75x15's on it before the 31's. Thats about 27x 9 in. So I did go up quite a bit on the tire size. No gear changes yet. Thought about going to 3.92 gears but decided to wait until I feel that I will not try to lift it anymore. Dont want to change gears twice. I understand the larger tires will pull HP down simply due to weight. Are there any pullies out there on the aftermarket that could help with this? Thanks for the help.
