Subject: Blower Motor Troubles?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a 2001 Dak and none of the fan speeds work on the blower. The fuse was blown and I replaced it but still no luck. Is this a common problem? Will I get lucky replacing a resistor or be royally screwed and have to take apart the whole dash to fix the problem? Anyone who has had an issue with the fan speed/blower motor or anyone else who may have some information, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan

could be blower motor resistor pack.

Check the fuse again. If this new one is blown, you might have a blower motor problem. Otherwise, the resistor block is the next best thing to check.

Blower motor resistor. I have blown up 2 so far. Really cheap and easy fix. Its underneath the passenger side dash. Just pull two screws and unplug it. Resistor is like 13 dollars. You can have it swapped out in under 10 minutes. Dakotas are known for this problem. I have fixed 2 of my friends/coworkers trucks that went bad. Dodge knows of the it and has a new updated part that is supposed to last longer but no recall.

Thanks! I am getting the resistor from my local dealership tonight (11 bucks) and I am gonna give it a shot. Even the parts guy at the dealer said that they stock a lot of resistors because they are constantly failing. Hopefully it will solve my problem!
I appreciate all of your help!
Thanks,
Dan

Dan I agree it's probably the resistor, but I drive an '01 too and just to let you know it's very easy to replace the blower motor if it is bad. Just remove the 3 screws holding it in and it comes out from under the dash. Some of the older Dakotas you had to pull the evap housing to get to the blower motor.

Good luck.

I'm not so sure the resistor pack is going to
fix your problem, Danpd66. Most times you'll still
have high speed on the blower when the pack goes
bad.

Let us know what you find wrong..

Swapped out the resistor and nothing, fuse was fine and then checked the power. There was no power to it. I was excited to crawl under the dash and find the blower motor right there being held in by 3 screws. Called Murray's, Advance Auto, and Autozone, two of the places said it was a dealer part, Advance Auto can get it for 195.00 bucks! Time to hit up the salvage yards!

Thanks again everyone for your help! I'll let you know what happens when I swap out the motor.

Dan

My 01 service manual also says a bad fan switch could be the cause of the inoperative blower motor. In fact, the manual says check the switch before checking the resistor block or the motor itself. If you had no voltage present at the motor, try temporarily connecting 12 volts and ground to the motor and if it turns, obviously the motor is OK. The manual says the fan switch controls the blower speed through the resistor pack by changing the resistance of the ground circuit to the motor through the resistor pack, at varying levels according to the selected speed on the switch. The highest fan speed sees the least resistance on the ground circuit to the resistor and the motor. According to the manual you can check the switch by testing with a volt ohm meter between ground and the terminals on the back of the switch. It says check the switch while it is unplugged. And there should be continuity to ground at each of the 4 terminals for fan speed, only one terminal should show continuity at a time. If more than one terminal shows continuity to ground on the same fan speed the switch is bad.

The manual also mentions a blower motor relay but I looked for a long time and could not find the location of the relay. It is also possible the ignition switch is bad or has a bad accessory output. The ignition switch in the 01 Dakota has 1 starter output, 2 accessory and 2 ignition outputs. According to the manual the wire from the ignition switch that supplies power to the blower motor is dark green. It's an accessory output. You might check that wire from the switch for voltage with the ignition switch in the run position.

It was both the blower motor and the resistor. Now it's working like a charm! Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

The second brand new vehical of my life. My truck. I am just
as dissapointed with my truck as I am with my Hyundai. We
all know that accents suck!!!! My truck brand new has had
several problems dry rotted tires, blower motor was not
working intermittently before end of warranty then finally
stopped working after warranty ended got It fixed. Then now
guess what its not working again. My suspension is acting
up. Ball joints thumping, and exhaust rusting out just like
my bumper. Along with a plethora of other problems. If
Anyone can give me instructions on how to check if a mouse
nest or something is the problem it would be great. It would
save a single mom some money last time it was fixed it was
over $300.00 this time who knows. The tires were over
$1000.00 even through Dodge should have taken care of it.
Please help. Thanks
