I can not believe that I'm posting about my cat again. I'm on my third, the last of which was replaced this past July. I've noticed an obnoxious stink wafting from under the truck, when getting out of it, but put it down to parking over the sewer grate. However... it has definitely gotten worse. This is not the kind of thing guaranteed to win you points socially as I can attest to after driving a friend home after dinner tonight. This had BETTER be just cause for warranty replacement because a silently flatulent truck is just a little too much to tolerate.

The rotten egg smell is common on pluged up or worn out cats. I am wounder why you have pluged or wornout so many? The worst offenders are usualy General Motors products. They use the cheapest cats of any of the auto makers. Are you useing an oil or fuel that is high in sulfur? If so stop useing them. You should also not use leaded fuel or lead substitute in your fuel.

I'm using the recommended 87 octane. I usually get the dealership to change the oil and to be honest I have no idea what they use. There have been a lot of posts concerning bad cats. I had my truck thoroughly checked out by a reputable mechanic who took it for 3 days.... I was concerned about bad 02 sensors, or some serious malfunction but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the truck. It's the cats, they suck big time. This thing is only a few months old, it's the first time I've had this particular problem, usually it's been shattered ceramic. I really don't want to spend the money on a high-flow one until I'm no longer covered under the emissions warranty, but this is getting a little ridiculous. Not to mention embarassing (It's the TRUCK, honest – the TRUCK).

Hi Lesley.
Hey, since this smell thing started...does it happen all the time? I've been worried about my cat, as that horrendous smell crops up...but it's only once in a while. Usually when I've driven the truck a bit hard. I too have read a lot of posts pointing out that particular um, odor. Thinking I should go get it checked. I don't use any funny business in my oil or fuel.

You really never learn how to swear until you learn to drive...

Hi Dakota Fan
No, like yours it's intermittent, enough that I kind of forgot about it, or figured it came from somewhere else. But, tonight you could smell it INSIDE the cab. Gross. I'm going to take it in on Tuesday, Monday being our Thanksgiving.

Andrew we went to the Souvlaki Hut, lots of tzatziki (?) sauce. Shouldn't you be typing? Or sleeping?

Nothing like stepping in a cold deposit of cat yak first thing in the morning. You know, the last time I smelled anything as bad as my truck smelled last night was when my friend's Chesapeake Bay Retriever got into the Christmas goodies.
There are 2 Dodge dealerships in my town, I think I will go and talk to the other one on Tuesday, maybe I can find some resolution with this.

There is really only one thing that makes a Cat stinky - too much gas in the exhaust (it cools the core enough to prevent complete conversion “burn”). It also makes ‘em plug up with deposits real fast. Yer running rich. I’d replace the O2 sensor (the one in front of the Cat if you have two). A poorly refined or old fuel will just make matters worse, so try switching brands (Phillips66 is particularly non-smelly).

Ask any owner of the Buick Turbo V6 – GM ran it slightly rich to keep the exhaust cool (and very stinky). Turbo City made a very, very popular chip that leaned things out and cleared up the smell.

Hmmm... I had the truck looked at and asked them to pay particular attention to the 02 sensors - which they said were fine. I've always gassed up at the same Esso station, maybe it's time for a change? We don't get Phillips66 up here (Canada). So, if it is plugged already, I will need a new one anyway, and should get them to replace the sensor as well.
