 Subject: Bad Intermedate Steering Shaft? or box

1997 Dak 3.9v6 5 speed 4x4
Ive been fighting this problem for along time now and its really starting to get to me. Loose steering. I have about 1 1/2 free play in the steering on center. And i believed it was in the steering box, but after going to the junk yard and getting a new box. i found everyone of the daks there had some free play in the steering (with the old steering box 4x4 verison of course)
Now im wondering if some of its coming from the intermedate shaft between the box and the steering wheel. The truck does not have tilt steering. How would one tell if theres play in the shaft and anyone know roughly how much a steering shaft costs from dodge? i know the box is about $580 bucks
Also i know none of the free play is coming from the tie rod ends inner or outer or pitman arm etc cause ive tested thos
