I took my 02 QC 4x4 4.7L to pepboys this morning to have their engine gumout aka engine flush service done. this is the same service I did on my old 95 CC 4x4 3.9L that restored mpg from no better than 14 to 16 mpg.

In atlanta area, 79.99 for service which includes penzoil and proline (pop boys branded) oil filter. I upgraded to royal purple and mobil 1 filter. Total cost was around $138 but I found a coupon for $20 off service over $100 on their website so my cost was around $118 taxes included.

The engine idles lower and the truck runs up to 200 rpm lower depending on speed.

they basically hook up a machine that pumps cleaning solution through oil filter port and vacuums it out drain to clean out sludge and buildup.

Dan M, Was the engine running during the flush?
If it was, were the lifters making any noise?

I had a tranny flush years ago and the engine
was running.. They used the tranny pump to do the
flush..

One more question... How many miles on your 02,
4.7, 4x4? My 02, 4.7, 4x4 just turned 45k. Low
mileage because it's parked and covered from
Spring till Sept.

Thanks..

placebo effect buddy..
axle / trans ratios, tire size, transmission lock-up,
affects at what RPM's the engine runs while driving, not the other way around.

the factory gauges are 1) not very accurate and 2) so heavily dampened that you can't possibly measure a 200 rpm difference.

OTOH, the 4.7 is a heavy sludge motor and I wouldn't be surprised if the crankcase breathes a little better because of it and the motor feels fresher. Depending on what they run as a flushing oil it may or may not have cleaned up the ring grooves a bit and you have better sealing in the cylinders.

I usually drain a quart of oil and run a quart of ATF in the crankcase for a week or so. Another option is draining half the oil and fillinf it back up with #1 diesel. Don't put it under any load with this and only run it for 20 minutes at high idle, then let it sit for a few hurs then run it for 20 minutes again.

Drain and refill with fresh oil. I burn the UMO/diesel in my garage furnace. When I'm storing an engine over winter or for more than a few months I fill it with straight ATF and idle it for 5 minutes.

The solvents in the ATF do a really nice job of cleaning the crankcase. I once stored an FE390 for 15 years this way and when I pulled it out to sell it, the inside looked like it was just made. ATF also disssolves carbon from pistons and from the intake and valves.

Happy motoring and remember...keep flushing.

'and'...two other myths,

ATF has no any better detergency than motor oil,

the 4.7 isn't a sludge motor, bad maintenance habits will sludge ANY motor

I don't know if it was running or not.

I didn't measure the RPM difference on the guage, I used my hand held scanner while driving.

I have about 86,500 miles on my truck. Now that I have my avenger, I wont be putting as many miles on it each year.

I have been using seafoam in the oil at every oil change since I bought the truck.

My old 95 had a lot of sludge in it, that's what made the fuel economy jump so much (actually restored to factory numbers).

Seafoam isn't motor oil, what's it doing in your crankcase?
Maybe that's what 'sludged up' your 4.7

? because i put it there. Preventative maintenance. Keep in mind, the truck had 45k or so miles when I bought it. could have been dino oil was used, I don't know.

http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUpTechGas.htm

When Added to Crankcase (Oil)

1. Frees sticky lifters and rings
2. Increases R.P.M.'s vacuum and compression
3. Cleans dirty parts
4. Removes moisture
5. Cleans PCV valve systems

For Peak Performance, Use SEA FOAM Every 2,000 to 5,000 Miles

Also keep in mind i do a lot fishing and volunteer work for NPS, GA DNR, and USFS as a member of TU. A lot of the fishing I do requires me to drive sometimes for an hour at speeds of 10-20 mph over rough terrain such as holes, mud, gravel, loose rock (some softball size) solid rock, etc. Basically I'm driving on US Forest Service or National Park Service roads which have little maintenance if any every year. That's severe driving and produces much heat which as we all know causes oil breakdown.
