Subject: increase towing on R/T?

Does anyone have a suggestion to increase the towing capacity & tongue weight for the R/T truck? I understand that it is limited to 200 / 2000lbs. Has anyone towed more with out problems or added an aftermarket product? I need to pull two full size motorcycles on a trailer but I don't want to kill the suspension.

Yeah, you should have bought an SLT or a Sport, as they have more towing cpacity.

If I were you I would put on a trans cooler, active suspention everone is talking about, trailer hitch and wiring. I think you could tow just fine with that combo. I tow a 5000lbs holiday trailer with my 97' RC 4x4 auto. I wouldn't worry about the trans either it is the 46re and I have the 44re.

My R/T was a towing machine! The reason for the reduced towing capacity is the rear suspension. With it slightly lowered, the axle is pretty close to the bump-stop. It's more a matter of actual tongue weight than anything else. I towed a tandem axle car trailer with another Dakota on it a number of times without any problems. I also towed my "toys" to the Dunes on very many occasions. I'd guess that the max I towed with it was about 5,000 lbs with no trouble. The main thing is not overloading the tongue weight. 200 to 300 lbs is no problem. You will need a receiver hitch rated for the weight you are carrying. Definately don't try much weight with the stock bumper. It's more for decoration than anything else! hehehe You didn't say what year your R/T was, but there is already a trans cooler on it. If you have a '98 or '99, just lift the rubber flap up that's in front of the radiator on top. You will see the trans cooler between the radiator and the AC condensor. If you have a '00 or newer, I don't know where they put it.... mine was a '98. I have the complete R/T suspension on my 4.7 sport right now. It tows just fine also.
