I always wondered if engineers actually used or repaired the products they designed. Now I know. I just got done replacing the plug wires on my 2000 R/T and let me tell you, it wasn't the 20 minute job I told my wife it would be. I mean, how hard could it be? Well, an hour and a half and a skinned knuckle later, I was done, and it was no fun. Not that is was worst thing I ever did, but I am a purist (that's politically correct for nut-case) and I wanted the wires to be routed the same as the originals. I even went the the Dealer to buy Mopar wires so I wouldn't have any issues with them fitting correctly. Oh well, it's done and I had a great Christmas dinner after. I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas, also.

I know where you're coming from, Over the Hill.
I love working on my old AMC. When I open the
hood, you can see the ground. Believe me, it's
FUN to work on the thing.

I open the hood to my 02 with the 4.7 and I dread
every second I *have* to do anything to it. Even
the oil filter is a pain in the rear to take off
and install.

I know what you mean about engineers working on
their own moron ideas they come up with. You can
bet they DO NOT! And lets face it, the junk that's
being put together today will NEVER outlast my old
AMC.

Have a great holiday season!

There designs are done with precision. The idea is, every year they get more and more buyers that get more and more scared to work on these mechanical wonders . Improves there business and raises the prices they can charge you and get away with it. I changed my rotors in my own nicely heated garage. Took 45 minutes counting cleaning tools and putting everything away. Total cost was 114 bucks for napa best rotors. The dealer wanted 350 bucks. Ya got to be crazy to pay it. They got me once. convinced me I had a miss in the engine and suggested trying the plug first 5.2 #3 cyl. I was there and already in a stall soI said change it. It fixed nothing and get this. 87 bucks. ONE PLUG ONLY. My power loss was the cat. There going to get all they can figuring your to stupid.

Obio3 - that's why I never let my wife do anything auto related except wash it or take it to the only shop I trust.

Dealer told her that her old 95 mustang was running bad because it had bosch spark plugs. Ford engines didn't run with bosch plugs, they had to be motorcraft. They wanted $300 to do tuneup. She was going to pay it!

I didn't have time/motivation to change brakes in my old 95 dakota, shop wanted to charge me $1500. I did it myself for around $400. I MADE time to save 1100!

I am sure there's a lot of people who pay that simply because they don't know any better. I'm wondering how many of those are women who think they must go to dealer.

Brakes and tune-ups are about the only thing that I still do on my vehicles. I'm not a mechanic, but I have replaced rings and done valve jobs on a couple of cars that I have owned - back in the 60's and 70's. Hell, I bought some throttle body cleaner and after using it it ran so rought that I had to take the it to my mechanic to reset the TPS. Evidentally, it had slowly changed it's settings as the throttle body got dirty - Cost: $100.00. What happened to the simpler days?? Athough, I have to admit that cars and trucks last a LOT longer than they used to - with fewer problems. I have an 1988 Buick Century that I bought new and has over 200K on it and still runs like new. Oh well, what are we going to do?

You should look under the hood of a modern car! You have to remove those plastic shield things to even see anything. You can see plug wires.

From what I've been reading, to replace the battery in my 08 avenger, I have to remove the tire. You can jump from under the hood but can't replace battery that way. Why didn't they just put it in the trunk instead of making me take a tire off.

You maybe right partsmanager.

My 08 avenger is the first vehicle I've seen that design on. My wife and I have owned 06 jetta, 02 grand am and 05 mustang. Only the avenger has the battery like that. The other vehicles did have the plastic cover, but the battery was easily accessible.

Do you REALLY think Chrysler will back that
so called "Lifetime Warrenty"?

I hope you read all of the very fine print about
the warrenty..

I have indeed, it's a nice little warranty book.

I also am going to keep multiple records of every thing (oil changes, transmission flushes, etc).

My 08 Dakota has the Lifetime Powertrain Warranty and I too am skeptical about it. I drove my '97 Dakota for 10 years and 172k miles and only had one major powertrain issue (3.9L timing chain slap) during its useful lifespan. Going from memory here, but I think the fine print says something about they will cancel the remainder of the warranty when the repair cost exceeds the cash value of the vehicle - and that right there marks the end of "Lifetime" in all practical terms. Essentially, they'll cover it until the vehicle is spent, meaning when the engine is worn out, you're SOL. You also have to take it in for an "inspection" every 5 years (at which point they'll probably give you a grocery list of things that need to be fixed, which will void your warranty if you don't get fixed, some of which will likely be non-warranty items ie $$ in their pocket)

WOW dakota2112, that fine print sure can hide ways
to void that new lifetime powertrain warranty
can't it?

I knew the second I heard about it on TV that
Chryslers white shirts thought this process out,
wrote the fine print to bail out of it.

Nothing new.. It's the new way to do business in
the US. As long as big business CEO's get their
bonus, the little guy (us) keeps getten screwed.

And we are suppose to feel sorry for them when
their profits are down. NO WAY!

Stop bitching. If you don't like it buy something else. You pussies who tie everything to CEO pay and corporate profit make me laugh. You have no clue who, how or where your bread gets buttered. Go live in China if you hate our system so bad. A few years there will heal the crap hole under your nose.

The lifetime warranty is great for family guys who don't play tinkerbell with their cars and fück them up beyond repair and then come to this board and complain about stupid engineers and CEO compensation packages.

Of course, most of the idiots on this board will fück up their trucks so bad on their own, Chrysler has no worries offering their version of a lifetime warranty.

To Calikota:

First, I bought the wires from my friendly Dodge dealer. I hated to pay the price (87.00), but they were a perfect match for the original ones. Doing the job was pretty straight foward: I removed the air intake from the throttle body and filter box and then I just removed one at a time, starting on the right front. There is a protective cover over each one at the coil end. if you feed the new wire into it as you remove the old wire, it will be a lot easier to put it on the new wires. The coil wire has the cover over the entire length and I learned the hard way after I removed it from the old wire. As I said, it wasn't really too difficult, just tight quarters and time consuming.
Good luck - Rick

Dan M I have a 98 Chrysler and the battery is in front of the right front tire as well, the way I understand it, Chrysler did that when they first came out with the Intrepid, I don't remember just what year that was though. I took my car to Wal-Mart and they said the battery was bad so I told them to replace it. About an hour later they said they couldn't change it. I took the batt. with me and changed it myself, I didn't think it was very hard, but I do a lot of mechanical work any way. Most of my mech. is on my 2000 Freightliner truck though a lot bigger and heavier.
Good Luck to all
