so I'm finally going to make the jump from single exhaust to single in and dual out. I want to get rid of the stock muffler with something more aggressive sounding. But, I don't want something too loud it will drown out the factory stereo at highway speeds. My truck right now needs new door seals as it's a little loud with wind noise now driving at highway speeds.

I was thinking the flowmaster 50 series. I read several posts with people saying the 40 series was too loud.

any other mufflers I should consider that will be more aggressive than stock but not resonate too much in cab.

Well Dan M, I just had my stock muffler replaced
with a "Cherry Bomb" (one input and two outputs).
I think it sounded good for about the first two
weeks and I was VERY supprised my better half
didn't have anything bad to say about it BUT
that came to an end last evening. There was a LOT
of high winds around NW Ohio all weekend and I was
on the Ohio Turnpike with my 02 (4.7) 4x4 and the
winds were so strong it was kicking me in and out
of over drive. The DROWN from the Cherry Bomb
muffler in the cab was NOT nice to hear at all and
the little woman noticed it too.

I *may* have to trash it before my yearly trip
pulling my 26' travel trailor to the U.P. of
Michigan this next Sept. OR sooner. It seems that
when the 4.7 has to work a little it sets up a
drown in the cab that isn't nice on the ears.

You *might* want to locate a few Dakota owners
that have installed those Flow Masters, Cherry
Bomb, etc systems and take a ride in some before
you pick one.. You may want to stay stock.

Page two of this site has a comment I made about
it when I had it installed when I had other
problems with my Dakota. It's the last thread.
It's titled; Spedo Sensor
Yea, one "E".. Stupid me! lol
Have a Great Christmas!

Gibson is one that will give a bit more tone without a real bad drone in the cab; I went with the single sweptside.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Hi Dan don't know if you caught my post last week in the V6 board? Thrush has a new muffler out. It's a fully welded chambered muffler just like the flow masters. However big diff is the dollars. This muffler runs about 38$ to 44$ depending on where you go. I installed one on a friends Chevy truck. A local speed shop had it in 1 day for me 41$
The muffler looks and sounds good, real deep throaty sound and not annoying. Just wanted to chime in and give you other options.

Me again guys, forgot to ad I got my daughter a ipod
thing for xmas. What I am going to do is have her figure out how to make a sound clip. Once she's got it figured out I'll have that Chevy over and we'll get a sound clip posted.

Take my advice Dan M. They ALL sound good on the
outside. It's all in what you want to put up with
inside the cab that counts.. At least to me it is.

Radioman good point! I seen one older guy that liked the sound of a FM he put on but didn't like the sound inside. He got some thermotech header wrap. Soaked it in water claimed it made it easier to work with. He wrap the muffler up with it tight. He says now that the sound level inside is where he wants it and sounds the same outside. I never drove the truck before or after so I can only go by what he said. I do know however it does sound the same outside.

I have always wondered why people want to take a perfectly good, quiet truck and make it sound like a POS with an aftermarket muffler. Isn't there enough noise in the world already?

I have an 88 Dakota and I put on a Thrush Turbo 2 1/2 in/out and I am very pleased with the way it sounds, not very loud, just sounds mellow. I got mine at O'reilly's for $20 I think about 3 years ago, in the summer I have my windos down and it doesn't bother me, going down the high way (70 MPH) its not a problem. I don't like the real loud stuff myself. Just another suggestion to check out.
Good Luck
