Subject: NEVER EVER HAD THIS TYPE OF PING!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi Everyone, I have a 95 dakota v-8 manual trans. The truck runs awesome except for one thing. Just to start, Every common thing you can think of has been looked at. Lots is all new. What the truck does is it likes to ping when the tempeture outside is above 82 degrees. If the temp is lower no problem. If it is above 82 degrees outside I run 89 octane fuel and ping is gone. If below I go back to standard unleaded, no ping. Now all the normal obvious things have been looked at on this truck and checked out ok. Just for reference I have 3 of these exact trucks and this is the only one that does this. I am looking for original ideas not the obvious, very unsual ideas or experiences. Thanks everyone.

I just wanted comments that were original not the obvious, everything obvious has been checked. I will explain to you anyway. On the 94 and 95 models if you know these trucks real good, there is a litte tiny window with a flashlight that you can see thru that shows the egr valve is working, you can actually watch the stem. And also the egr was removed to make sure no passage ways were plugged in anyway. Also intake was removed all surfaces cleaned very well all new gaskets and belly. So do you have or know of someone with a very unusual fix they had. That is what I want to hear from someone.

We don't know what you'd find unusual until you let us know what you checked that you thought was obvious. What's obvious to some, isn't obvious to everyone - and some of us just don't want to deal with that kind if condescending attitude while trying to help someone...

These were known to have 'piston slap' at the skirts. Mine is the same as yours, '95 V-8 (auto) and in warmer conditions under load it 'rattles'. Let up on the foot feed and it goes away. To me the cost does not warrant the cure. I have 119K on it and it still runs fine...other than the 'rattle'...

Well that is interesting. Are you sure the piston slap is that bad to be able to actually hear it? Are you sure it's not the maybe the valve train rockers or something? Was your info from a good reliable source?

Read some years back...I believe one of those online "Click-n-Clack" web-sites where someone writes in with their auto woes and a couple of former auto mechanics answer the question. It was one of those sites you stumble across. Can't for the life of me remember it. My '95 started this about 7 years ago (after the warranty ran out of course) so I started searching for answers and that was one of the two (other being the plenum gasket).

95 V-8?

Would that be a 5.2, or a 5.9?

Or does it matter?

The 5.9 was not available in the Dakota in '95. As far as the pinging/ oil consumption, I believe the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) addressed them both.

Maybe the engine is just sludged up? I was having the same problem AFTER fixing the plenum gasket.

This is what I did to fix the pinging...

Try buying some Sea Foam and running it through the throttle body, following the exact directions on the can.

Also buy some www.auto-rx.com and do the complete cleaning cycle, following the exact directions on the website.

For my 1999 5.2 liter Dakota, there was a TSB for spark plug wires arcing against each other. I followed the TSB and rerouted them, and then put wire loom on them where they touched each other or the block.

Doing all of the above got rid of 100 percent of the pinging on my 5.2 liter Magnum.
