I have a 2003 V6 Dodge Dakota 2WD. I been have a reocurring problem that now is consiistent. For awhile my truck temp would begin to increase and if I had the heat on it would turn cold, then all of a sudden it would return to normal. My antifreeze had to be topped off. I cannot see where it may be leaking. Now I got in the truck this morning and it is now overheating blower blowing hot then cold. Does this sound like a water pump?????

Cap, coolant and thermostat are a good start.
(check condition of the hoses while your at it too)

When re-filling, it's important to purge all the air from the system,
Idle the engine, heater on full heat / maximum fan speed setting.

Leave the radiator cap off, while the engine is warming up to normal temp, you'll notice air
bubbles coming to the top and will have to constantly add coolant to keep it full.

Once completely purged and warmed up,
the coolant will slowly rise all the way to the top / slightly overflow too.

re-check the level once cooled down to 'full cold'

(if you really want heat, stick with the factory
recommended thermostat, 192* or so. Skip the 180*)

Everything except the heater blowing hot then cold possibly points to a blown belly pan gasket or maybe even head gasket, in addition to the possibilities listed previously. I would definitely start with filling the coolant, then changing thermostat (or both at the same time). Then water pump, then gaskets.

The reason Im thinking gaskets is the fact that you're missing coolant with no visible leaks. Your coolant and oil could be swapping places, reducing the heat transfer capacity of your radiator on top of it being low on coolant. Head gaskets are not know to blow on the 3.9, but they are prone to blow bellypan gaskets. All in all though, it sounds more like t-stat from what you said. Lets hope so, because thats a cheap and easy fix.

What are the driving conditions when all this is happening? Highway, idling in the driveway, hard city driving ... ?

No symptoms at all. Just noticing the temp gauge rising. I am losing coolant, it looks like it may be coming from the water pump. From what I can see it is dripping from the pulley of the water pump.

if u got coolant coming down around the pullies its time for a water pump.theres a weep hole in the waterpump that signals when its goin bad.id change water pump,thermostat and coolant.not that hard and not really to much in cost.id do that before movin on to bigger and better things.
