Subject: Rollpan and Factory Hitch?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a nice baseball size dent on my rear bumper. It really stand out because the rest of the truck is perfect. I jsut can't bring myself to pay $1000ish for a painted bumper and instalation. I've been looking at rollpans. I like the look of them better and they are cheaper. Will I still be able to use my factory hitch with a rollpan? Does anyone have a good recomendation for a good rollpan? Thanks!

They use to make a roll pan that had a flip down license plate holder that allowed acess to the hitch receiver. I dont remember who made them thoough.

$1000 for a painted bumper? You pricing that at a dealer or something? I'm pretty sure I recall hearing that you can get a new bumper (unpainted) on Ebay for less than $200 SHIPPED. Paint shouldn't cost more than $100 or so I would think.

Regardless...you should be able to get a bumper for bout the same price as a rollpan. Unless you would prefer a rollpan. I'm thinking the roll pans with the flip-down license plates were made by Sir Michaels.

I'll look into the bumper again. I had it priced out at a body shop. Probably the wrong place to do it? Really only $100 to have it painted? I like that price! The flipp down license plate hitch ones require you to have a seperate hitch. That just jacks the price up more.

I was guessing on the painting cost, but it shouldn't be too high...I know I was quoted $300-400 to have a hood done a while back and that requires a lot more paint than a bumper.

I tried to find a bumper for you on Ebay, but can't seem to find jack...I was looking for one a while back and there were quite a few on there. If you drive a 97-04 Dakota, there are a few already painted ones (black) on there for around $240 shipped. There's also one or two chrome ones but they cost considerably more.

Another good place to check is http://www.car-part.com. It'll search all the local junkyards within whatever range you choose.

Thats my bad I thought you already had a frame mounted hitch, but I take it you use a ball in the bumper method. Im not sure they make a roll pan that you can tow off of.

I have a 2002 black R/T with an aftermarket soft roll pan. They come in factory colors for less than $300, and are easy to install with about 10 screws. Unlike steel they dont require bondo or painting. Since they are flexible they resist denting and are forgiving. You could use the bumper style hitch, but you will have to notch through the bottom of the roll pan to clear the receiver. A hidden hitch works with roll pans and they do have the flip down license plate kit for about $250. The $550 investment was well worth it and I sold the stock bumper for $150

Thanks for checking GB2000. I'll keep my eye on Ebay.

shadetree: I do have the stock frame mounted hitch, not the bumper and ball. Someone told me that those roll pans with the flip down license plates require a special hitch. I don't know how true that is.
