Excuse me if you already know this! They have to be pushed out the front of the control arm. Remove the pin first.

Good Luck CC

When I took mine out to replace them with larger bars, I pushed them out the back of the control arm with:
1) - A steel bar long enough to clear the front of the control arm so I could swing a bigass hammer without doing damage to myself or the control arm.
2) A bigass hammer; or BFH, if you prefer. Actually, it was a 5lb maul.
3) Someone at the back end of the torsion bar to pull down on it, as I banged the bar out from the front, so it would clear the crossmember interferences . Gotta have a helper.

Oh yeah. when you're wailin' away at the bar with the BFH, DON'T HOLD THE BAR WITH YOUR HAND. Use a vice-grip pliers or something. First time that hammer misses the bar, you'll be glad you did.

with the amount of rust that is on the front of the control arm i think it has a better chance of being hammered out the back

but is there another reason for it?
will the other end fit through that hole, i thought the hex on the rear was larger than the front
is it tapered or something?

Hex is the same size on both ends, and the torsion bar can be installed either end to front. Just can't mix left and right bars. Bad juju there.

Steve,

Are you sure about the swapping end to end? Swapping end to end would reverse the 'twist' on each respected bar. That would be the same as swapping side to side...which I agree, I thought you were not supposed to do. Kinda like working a bolt that has been holding something together for a long time. As long as it remains tight (torsion bar stays on the same side) it works well. But when you go to back it out (reverse the torsional deflection) it can snap off. Are new ones marked right and left?

No, that wouldn't reverse the twist.

For example: Take a click top ball point pen and hold in with the click top to the left. Loosen and tighten the bottom of the pen with your right hand. Now flip it around with the click top to the right and loosen and tighten the top with your right hand. It's the same twist.

Walt's right, Bill.

Here's a cut and paste from my FSM:
"CAUTION: The left and right side torsion bars are NOT interchangeable. The bars are identified and stamped R or L, for right or left. The bars do not have a front or rear end and can be installed with either end facing forward."

I had a mental block about that, too, until I did the analogy thing similar to Walt's explanation.
