hey all
i've been arguing with one of my buddies for a long time now because he keeps calling it a quarter ton and i keep telling him it isn't. from what i've heard from yall it has alot of the same things as the half ton. i know i know i could just put more than a quarter ton in the bed to prove him wrong but do yall know anywhere that states that the dakota is NOT a quarter ton?
thanks alot

Gross weight - net weight (empty) = payload

I had a 99 RC with the 1 ton payload package.

Look on your door sticker it lists the gross weight.

My QC has a payload of about 1100 lbs.

Your's is not a full-sized pickup, so technically, no "ton" description applies.
I have a 1987 Isuzu P'up that I routinely put over half a ton into. Does that make it a half-ton pickup? Nope. Makes it real easy to steer, though.

JJJ haas it right. Use those figures and call it whatever "ton" you want. It'll sound real silly, though. Cause it's not a full-sized pickup.

the one ton, 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton really dont have anything to do with how much actual weight you can put in them
i can put 3000lbs in my 1 ton

1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

They are just terms that have survived the test of time. I believe the 1930's was the last time that a 1/2 ton pickup could only carry 1000 lbs.

The whole quarter ton argument is silly, the payload of most (if not all?) dakotas are over 1000 lbs. Plus it's not a full size, as others mentioned, so it doesn't even play into the discussion.

Here's another one for you. What would you call a Chevy 1500HD pickup? Answer: A corporate loophole since it's above the 8500 lb GVWR limit in the eyes of CAFE and EPA. I guess the crew cab, luxury trim, short bed version can somehow be viewed as a "commercial use vehicle".

Not only will your truck haul about as much weight as a "half ton" truck; but in some ways it is stronger. Fisher recomended up to a regular duty plow for my Dak, but would not recomend a plow for the same year half ton Ram. The front end of our trucks will take MORE weight.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
A 1985 Dodge D100 pickup had a GVWR of 4800 pounds. The D150 was rated between 4800 and 5850 pounds. The biggest engine available that year for the half-ton pickup was a 5.9-liter V8 rated at 185 horsepower.

For 2005, a 2-wheel-drive Dodge Dakota Club Cab carries a GRWR of 6010 pounds and can be ordered with a 250-horsepower 4.7-liter V8. The 6010-pound rating is the same base GVWR as the revolutionary 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD pickup. The 5.9-liter V8 that year was rated at 230 horsepower.
I forgot to add, while technically not a 1/2 ton, Dodge has unofficially lumped the Dakota into their 1/2 ton class. It does share some common components and suspension design with the 1500.

Actually that should be

1/2 ton truck = f-150/ram 1500/chevy 1500
3/4 ton truck = f-250/ram 2500/chevy 2500
4/4 ton truck = f-350/ram 3500/chevy 3500

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one
