I have a 2000 sport 4.7 auto 2wd. I towed my motorcycles 1400 miles (1200 lbs with trailer) now the transmissions is changing rpm all over the place. It seems the lock up convertor is slipping. There are no warning lights on. Is this a typical problem? I have 109000 on truck and had the tranny fluid changed three time in the life of truck. This is first time I pulled anything more then 100 miles, and probly the the heaviest thing I towed. I always heard the auto tranny are junk.
Any input or more questions you need answers to let me know
Jim

Did you check for stored malfunction codes ? Key on off on off on (not start, just on) will display any codes in odometer, ending with pdone. If you're lucky, this could be as simple as bad input from an engine sensor. I haven't heard anyone knowledgable claim this tranny is junk - I have the exact same tranny as you (45RFE) and mine has held up well, towing much heavier than you and plowing too.

I hope it is that simple. It seems like the torque convertor was locking and unlocking all the time. I will check and see if I get any info when I get home from work tonight

I saw on another site where I could have the 45RFE reflashed to have a extra overdrive also. Does anyone know who could do that??

I know that was available for Jeeps with a 3.73 rear from the dealerships; but haven't heard about availibility for Dakotas. Are you sure you want that though ? The guys with that 545RFE variation sometimes complain about constant shifting, worse when towing...

From what I'm reading it doesn't seem to make a difference in gas mileage. That was all I was thinking about. Really hope there is not a problem with the trans. Glad to see this is same one used in the rams. Most miles on my truck where done empty go back and forth to work, so it has a easy life.

Have you checked the trans fluid level? I think there was a TSB out on the dipstick and its tube, where fluid could come out of there when it was hot. The TSB cited the possibility of fire, but I am wondering if you lost fluid when the trans heated up from towing so far. Just a thought...

That was first thing I checked. It was ok, about 4oz low so added that and it did the same thing.

Any other ideas??

Thanks
Jim

Not here; except that what you towed shouldn't be considered "so far" to tow; nor do we have any info here that the trans "heated up" as Lee supposes. That light a load over that distance should not cause a problem - I pull 4 times that much weight in July heat over very hilly terrain with no trouble. There's no way what you did should be expected to heat up or damage the tranny.

even with no code for 35 bucks i`d change out the TPS see if that fixes it(real simple swap out too). can cause erratic behavior with out throwing a code. your trans is not junk and you have changed the fluid three times more than most and they still have no problems. i`d be surprised if you had a major problem.

Will change TPS, worth $35 to see if it helps. Does a certain brand work better then others??

I tried to keep fluid fresh. I knew the history of the older tranny's and never researched how good this one was.

Thanks for all the help!

Replaced the TPS and seem to work fine. Will probly change the fluid just to give it fresh because of all the locking and unlocking it was doing.
Glad to hear the tranny's are alot better then previous ones. If problem comes back I will bring topic back up.

You Guys Rock!!
Thanks for help
Jim
