Subject: Dakota's rear sliding glass

I had to break out my rear glass. Yea, I locked
the doors with the keys inside. I was many miles
into the north country camping. Even cell phones
had no service.

Anyway, I broke out the middle slider on my 02
4x4. When I got home a week later I took the truck
to a local glass company. I asked them to just
replace the middle glass I broke out. They said
that could not be done because that glass is
placed in as the frame and fused together at the
factory and the complete back unit will have to be
replaced to the tune of $377.00. I told then I'd
think about it and left.

I then went to the local stealership parts dept
and asked them if just the middle slider could be
replaced. They looked it up and YES it can be
replaced and you don't even have to remove the
unit for the truck.

It was one of the most easy jobs I had even done!
All you have to do is remove the slider felt
tracks (upper and lower), pivit the glass in the
opening and re-install the slider felt. DONE!

The glass cost $120.00. A bit pricy but better
than $377.00 from the glass company or $450.00
from the steslership if you had to replace the
entire unit.

So do some checking before to shell out your hard
earned money to some company that just wants to
rip you off or your insurance company.

Nice! The stealership comes through!

I carry a spare key for that reason when I go on my fishing trips. I keep it in my wallet. I keep my fishing license in my wallet. When I go wading, I put my wallet in a zip lock bag.. even if I take a tumble (never! especially when someone is watching!), wallet is still dry.

I fish and camp in some remote wooded areas in ga, tn and nc for trout. Most of the time i have no cell phone service either.

Thanks for the tip!

This is great! When my brother owned my truck, he broke the glass because he was locked out. He fitted some thin plexiglass sheet in there, sucks. The cap on the bed provides security, but I've wanted to fix this without doing the entire rear window. Hope this is true for 1992 as well.

Dealer says center glass N/A for 1992, only the entire rear window, $467 new (and seems to be $150 if you find a junk one).

Sorry to hear you can't get just the center glass
for your 92, Bob Lincoln. I don't know what the
first year you could.

If the dealer shows a blow up of the back window,
you can gets just the parts you need so I was
told by the counter person.

Yup, went through that, and the entire rear window is one assembly for the 1992.

Bob,

The Dakota rear window remained unchanged thru '96. Did the Parts guy look at later years? If so, never mind. If not, maybe there is still hope! Good luck.
