Subject: Changing Rear Diff oil
IP: Logged

Message:
Went to Pep Boys yesterday for a rear diff cover gasket to change the oil on my 02 CC and they told me they don't make one. Does anybody know if a gasket is available or do they recommend using oly RTV on the cover? Always used a gasket with RTV and was wondering if using only RTV is advisable? Thx for your comments.

All the differential oil changes on my trucks have had only RTV to seal. Works just fine. Make sure you get all the old stuff off, and cirle the bolt holes with the goop (don't get any into the holes). You'll be fine.

What's your left foot doing?

I used the Mopar brand of RTV sealant on mine. No other gasket on it and it worked fine. It's supposed to be made for rear ends/differentials.

I was surprised to find out that there's also no gasket for the pan on the automatic transmission. RTV is the only thing we are supposed to use, so that's what I do. I clean the part thoroughly with brake parts cleaner, spread the RTV properly and let it cure over night. Done it twice now (every 30,000 miles) with no drips at all (knock on wood).
