I'm considering installing one of these myself as a weekend project but i'm not sure if it's more trouble than it's worth. Has anybody installed one of these or one similar? I have the black key so i don't think i need any special parts. Is this biting off more than i can chew? school starts soon and i need my truck. Is it a matter of just hooking up some wires or do i have to strip my truck? Any advice would be greatly appreciated because i've never done anything like this before, just audio.

If you can use a volt meter, wire up relays and understand resistor values it should be no problem to install your remote start. If your truck has electric door locks, then you have to use relays set up for a negative trigger thru 2 different resistor values to a single wire at the CTM to lock and unlock the truck. If you don't have factory electric locks, you can add aftermarket door lock actuators fairly easily, and the remote start unit will control them.

Other than that, it's a process of interfacing with battery positive voltage, accessory and ignition voltage (Dakotas have 2 ignition and 2 accessory circuits), one of the coils for a tach signal, and the brake switch for a shut-down to the remote start unit. It's not advisable to add remote start if you have a manual transmission. And since you have the black ignition key, you are correct about not needing the interface for the factory immobilizer.

It's not hard to install a remote start, but you need to have a good understanding of security systems and how they operate. I have the wiring information for your truck if you need it. Post here with your email address and I'll send it to you. Or you can get it from http://www.bulldogsecurity.com. It's in the vehicle wiring diagrams page.

Good luck with it.

Jimmy

HEY MARC,if I were you I let a pro that knows these remote starters for installation , myself being a ASE mechanic let them handle it plus they have all the good connectors so you don't botch your wiring all to sh!t and also if you do be sure you don't need any special relays or anything they would have on hand so your not needing to order or have to special order. I know my good freind does this for a living and he told me from the start if your ignition key is grey you have to wire it certain way so you don't screw up your factory alarm that came with it which I didn't had the black key LUCK OUT there more money if you did CAREFUL if you wish to do it otherwise you might not have a truck that will start or even if you miss one wire it won't work properly or at all.If you choose the route I took you be happier in the long run regardless of your mechanical and electrical knowledge. Good Luck let us know how it turns out I paid a few bucks to have it done pays for itself later
