Hi guys, I need some suggestions. I have a '01 Dakota 3.9L 4X4 auto. with 75,000 miles on it. I recently put a set of Halo plugs in, thinking it would increase my gas mileage. So far, I'm getting between 17-19 mpg highway which is no change from the Autolite 3923's that were in it. I'm going to put in a set of NGK-FR5's this weekend, hopefully this will help my mpg. I do have a question about the color of the inside of the tailpipe, it's a sooty black color, which indicates to me the engine is running rich. Any ideas what could cause this coloration. How many O2 sensors does this Dak have? Also, when it comes to power, forget it, they left that on the assembly line!! Any help would be appreciated!

Flogging the 3.9 to try to make it run like a v8 will kill the milage, probably get better results with a lighter pedal. Decent power for your truck was only left on the assembly line if you didn't opt for a v8. Better to check for rich running by reading the plugs, rather than the tailpipe. You want to see a light tan color; rich will be darker.

Toyota and some Fords have totally clean tailpipes. Then you'll see the same model with black, oily soot. Ditto Dodges.
I've asked and never got any satisfactory answer.
My plugs still come out looking like they went in. The engine uses a quart every 3 to 5,000 miles. Dodge engines run notoriously lean. So, what is it?
I suggest finding something else to worry about.
By the way, my only serious MPG and power improvment was Gibson Headers.

My 02' now 5yrs. 72,000+ miles tailpipe clean as day I bought it plugs still white to light tan every tuneup at 20,000 & 02 sensors changed @ 65,000 I wouldn't worry about it yes our trucks do have a tendency to appear lean on our plugs when changing thats why I see lot burned exhaust valves & seals worn thats why I don't give many thoughts on all these different plugs out there, just be sure you have the correct fuel pressure and you don't have intake manifold or plenum leaking which will make our plugs white and any vacuum leaks that need to be considered to I thought I had problem to but not the case
