A question for those of you that have one. Any recommendations on what to look for, what to stay away from, or any other comments.

Thanks.

Are you aware that many of our trucks can pull the codes without using a scanner ?

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Yes I do, and I love DC for allowing us to do that but, I have 2 Fords and 1 Pontiac that to my knowledge you cant pull the codes outa them with out one. This will be a gift to my daughter's boy friend who is starting out in the auto trade, and I will borrow it from time to time.
Any ideas?

They have some at Wal-Mart for about $100. They work. I never had any problems out of them.

There is a group buy for a couple of OBD scanners on a fellow dakota website. And they do a lot more then just pull codes. Check it out.

Snap on 2500 works well, upgradeable etc.
Don't waste your money on just a code grabber, you need to be able to see sensors, actuate relays, etc. IMO

You can buy them used, depends on what you want to spend I guess though.
