So now that it's almost August that means the new 08 Dakotas should be rolling into the dealer lots in the coming weeks.

In digging around the internet I see that several sites list the HP just over 300 and the torque around 330. it's a nice little bump over the 290/320 they stated in the feb press releases.

so our beloved dakota's get a much needed boost to in power for the V8 magnums. I mean, come on, v6's have been pushing the same hp numbers as old reliable. Even the V6 mags are not too far off in HP from the v8 mags. I know the difference in torque between the V6 and V8 but still it's a V8 it should have considerable more power than V6.

So, in Feb Dodge tossed out that the new V8 mag would have considerably better fuel economy. But they never leaked any numbers. I still can't find any written numbers but did find a few odd lines on some websites such as "better than 5%" improved fuel economy .. which is not the considerably better fuel economy we were lead to believe in the Feb press releases. 5% on 18 mpg highway is not even 19 mpg highway.

Is anyone considering a 2008 dakota? I am if fuel economy is really substantially improved. what do i consider substantially improved? I'm on the market if the new dak's get 18+ city and 25+ highway.

Let's make this a contest. guess the fuel economy of the new 08 dakotas. I'll toss in 12 hand tied flies tied by yours truly. In the event there are multiple winners there will be a random drawing between the winners to determine who gets the prize. I'll write everyone's name in on a piece of paper and my wife can draw one out of a hat.

Does anyone else want to toss out something for the prize pool? Maybe for 2nd and 3rd place? Let's keep the prize value down. What's your guess?

The contest is open until midnight July 31st or when the fuel numbers are officially released, whichever comes first.

My guess is 17/21.

Oh yeah, you have to guess the city and highway correctly to win.

If no one gets it, we'll come up with a way to award a winner.

And the winning numbers will be from window sticker of my local 5 star dodge dealer - to make it "even" we'll pick the following vehicle to guess the fuel economy

2008 dodge dakota Club Cab 4x2
auto transmission (go with standard option tranny in case they release multiple speed tranny's)
4.7L V8

This will give us the vehicle to search on to find the posted fuel economy.

have i left anything out?

I say we give that little dakota a test for all its worth. Hook it to a large uhaul tralior and then pull it down the frozen lakes near Yellowknife Canada.

the new 08's started rolling off the assembly line at dodge city (where ram and mitsu raider are made) on aug 6th.

302 horsepower – a 31 percent improvement
329 lb.-ft. of torque – a 13 percent improvement

more than 5 percent improved fuel economy

5% more than sucky is still sucky. At least now the hp and torque numbers make it seem worth while for paying at the pump. LOL

5% of 15 is .75
5% of 18 is .9
5% of 20 is 1

and the dakota has optional full time 4wd. that's kinda cool.

For a big ass truck I do not consider that sucky.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one

hey guys yea the gas sucks and when you gotta fill up. but come on... nobody buys a v8 pickup truck for fuel economy. if your very concerned about it get a 4 cyl ranger or s10. you wont have much fun. but youll get high 20s. or judt do like a lot of people do and get a beater car like a neon for 500 bucks and youll get well over 30 mpg

I get close to 22mpg sometimes. I do not think that is too bad. I used to get that with my 3.9. So for the added power it is well worth it for me.
