Subject: Which motors...?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 93 Dodge Dakota that has about 246,000 miles on it. I've had it for a long time and it's been a good truck. Now I'm looking to buy a new one and I want another Dakota because this one has lasted for so long.
I read this review of the 2000 Quad Cab on the cartalk website:
http://www.cartalk.com/content/testdrives/Reviews/dodge-dakota-quad-cab-2000.html
and it says "The 4.7-liter, double overhead cam engine is a fairly new design for Dodge. Its reliability is still unproven. The 5.9-liter, however, is Dodge’s tried and true push rod style engine, which should prove to be quite reliable."
So my questions are (1) Has the double overhead cam engine been reliable? and (2) Which Dakotas made since 2000 can I still find the push rod engine in?

i don't own a 4.7 but most of the regulars on here give it great reviews.

'04 was the last year for the any of the pushrod motors in a Dak. from '00-'03 either the R/T(RC or CC)the 5.9 was standard and all the QC's had the 5.9 option.

from what i've read on this site, there is no reason to shy away from the 4.7.

Word Daddio!

I have 121K+ miles on my '02 4.7L and not one problem, other than my O2 sensors. I get about 24mpg on the highway w/ about 20mpg average. Thats with me playing speed racer everyday.
I think I'm addicted to torque.
All in all, its the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned (ok, I've only owned one other car that was an '85 T-bird but compared to every car my family and friends have owned).

Plus no plenum gasket to worry about.

I have read of other folks w/ 4.7s that have had problems but they probably don't take care of their engines.

I am very happy with the two I have. Additionally, the auto tranny used for this engine is worlds better than the 42/44/46RE used on the 3.9/5.2/5.9 engines: it'll take more input TQ and doesn't require periodic band adjustments.

Some engine advantages? No distributor and plug wires to ever fuss with. The coil-on-plug gives a hotter spark than the old design. Equal power and better MPG than the 5.2 engine. Higher RPMs: 4.7L redline is 6200 and peak TQ is around 3400 - 5.2L redlines around 5200. The 4.7 is lighter.

What's your left foot doing?

Well, i take exception with one piece of the originating post:

"The 4.7-liter, double overhead cam engine is a fairly new design for Dodge. Its reliability is still unproven. The 5.9-liter, however, is Dodge’s tried and true push rod style engine, which should prove to be quite reliable."

Definitely not a 'double overhead' cam motor. only sohc. I can say my 4.7 has been faultless and has performed exceptionally well (knock on wood of course).

Fairly certain that 2003 was the last year for the 360 in the dakota. I don't believe the 360 lived to 2004 in the dakota.

The 4.7 was designed in the same overbuilt tradition as the LA/Magnum series engines. Very stout, and a worthy replacement.

Yeah dumb ass, it may have two cams, one over each head. That does not make it a double overhead camshaft engine. Go look at a Ford Mustang Cobra or Ford GT motor. DOHC motors have two cams for each head. What a jerk-off.

The new 4.7s are DOHC. Just not the ones from 2000 to 2007.

You think they will go with a VVT set up on the 4.7 soon?

On another note, I raced a Charger R/T yesterday.
I beat his ass to 60 the first time and the second time we were neck and neck all the way to 60, with my A/C on.

2000 4.7 auto here. 90000 miles, bought new. Runs like new. As for as the truck goes problem wise, original ball joints are crap. Replace. Shock absorbers are crap. Replace. Brake rotors are crap. Replace. Seats suck. Normal loss of sensors wearing out. Besides that, it's been a great truck! When I bought it, I figured I'd keep it a few years and trade it in. (Always took care of it though) It's been 7 years and I'm planning on keeping it for another 7. Or however long it lasts without being crashed or require multiple, major repairs. Dodge built a winner with the 4.7! Damn thing's as reliable as a toyota.

As far as the brakes go mine have been perfect and still on original rotors and not even turned yet at 50k miles.

However, I think us folks lucky to have the 4 wheel disc brakes may have bigger ones than the other truck models without. One thing for sure is you can't fit a 15" rim around them!

My experience has been the same EXACTLY! I have a little over 85,000 miles on my 2000 4.7 / Auto trans, and the engine and trans still perform like new.

I had one o2 sensor go out one time. I was able to replace it myself with the loaner wrench set from Autozone.

The ball joints started to clunk, so I replaced them all with Moog ones.

The air conditioning needs to be recharged every other year. It's the only thing I need a repair shop to deal with, other than smog checks.

I went with Bendix brakes up front. So far, they have lasted much better than OEM.

I change the engine oil and filter every 3,000 miles, change the trans fluid and filters (along with the spark plugs) every 30,000 miles, and the engine coolant every 60,000 miles. With the exception of the engine oil and filter (as well as air filter), ALL fluids and parts come from the Dodge dealer. At this point, if the truck got totalled and needed to be replaced, another Dakota 4.7 would be my #1 choice!

And I have 120,000 on mu original brakes, rotors, reaR 11 inch drums, etc., on my 2001 Quad, SLT, 4.7, manual. 120,000 on my original brakes, and it still stops fine, no warning pad squeel, etc!!

AND 1hotdakota,
the 4.7 is NOT DOHC!!!, they ARE SOHC (single overhead cam), in contrast with a push rod engine, that has only 1 cam.

Did you install your HO cams? Then why don't you know? heh heh, auto guy.

Correct 4.7 is SOHC.
Taken from Allpar.com. Maybe this'll help.
"The major difference between makes is the means of running the valve train; dual overhead camshafts, a single overhead camshaft, or pushrods. Chrysler chose pushrods and they worked amazingly well. By the way, does anyone know what the original hemis were called by Chrysler? "The Double Rocker." It wasn't til the 426 that "Hemi" became standard. And HEMI is now a registered trademark of DaimlerChrysler. [As of 2007 we believe this will revert to Chrysler Corporation, LLC.]"

DOHC means two cams per head.
SOHC means one cam per head.
Pushrods typically refers to a single cam in the block.

The NEW 4.7 is DOHC. Anyone wanting to argue this point needs to read up on the Daks more.

In my post, you will see that I said the 2000-2007 models were not DOHC but SOHC.

And yes, I installed the HO cams,

IN YOUR MOM!

Just kidding.
