Thanks Curly, I want to ask one more thing. I did a ohm reading on the temp. sensor and the air intake sensor. When cold the ohm readings are right where the book says. But when motor is warmed up they both give me a o reading for the ohms. The book actually gives me a ohm reading where it should be when warmed up. Now I would think right there and then my sensors were bad. But get this, I have 3 other dakotas and the other 2 run perfect with no pings. They check exactly the same way on the ohm readings. My meter is fine, there is nothing wrong with it. What do you think about that Curly???

Curly I checked the 41 terminal at computer, The volts level out at 1.05 and flip flop a little bit not much. That sounds good to the numbers you gave me. And it didnt take long to hit that. THOUGHTS?????

You should see the oxygen sensors flip flop from 0 to 1 and back to 0 constantly.

That's how O2 sensors work. They constantly switch between lean and rich. The overall goal is neither rich or lean. So by taking the average of lean and rich, you arrive at the happy medium.

If you don't see the voltage switch constantly, you have a bad sensor. By lazy, larry means it does not throw a code, but does not switch from rich to lean to rich as it should.

On my 02 dakota i watched the o2 sensor with my scanner with the factory and ngk replacements. with the NGK it switched from 0 to 1 faster than the factory one. The factory sensor is a good example of a lazy sensor. The factory ones (denso) had around 78k miles when i replaced them.

Dan when it flip flops from 1- 0 what is lean and what is rich, the o or the 1? If mine levels out at 1.05 would that be a constant rich mix? Also does it matter the rpm to check the reading. Is idle fine?

0 is lean and 1 is rich.

idle is fine - the sensors will still switch between rich and lean.

You just can't check it at WOT because O2 sensors are not used under that condition.

Also, how long did you test the sensors? The o2 sensors are not used in open loop mode. They are used in closed loop. The truck should be at normal operating temp when you tested.

Did you check after reaching normal operating temp? How long did you monitor the voltage? 1 min? 5 minutes?

Truck was fully warmed up. And I kept my meter on it for less than a minute. I figured if the sensor acted stupid it would. The bosch sensor in there now is less than a few months old. I just wanted to check because of hearing about lazy o2 sensors.

Larry mentioned that even the new sensors were lazy. He said he hooked them up to the osciliscope and looked at the wave form and saw the issue.

he said he doesn't use bosch o2 sensors anymore.

Get rid of that Bosch , need NGK .
Some meters tend to 'average' out
a reading which otherwise varies.
A 'cheap' [ analogue } (needle) meter
is better to see variations.
