So When I was leaving work to go to lunch yesterday my MIL came on. When I arrived at the shopping center with the restaurant, I pulled in and checked the code with my scanner. P0442 - small evap emissions leak.

yesterday morning on my way in I stopped at the gas station and put some gas in (did not fill it up). I drove around 20 miles after filling up to get to work.

I would think that if the leak were my gas cap, it would have came on sooner than it did. I had driven 20 miles, parked, worked until lunch, and driven around 1-2 miles before the light came on (41 mph according to freeze frame data).

Could it be the gas cap? I took it off, put it back on until it clicked several times like I always do. Light stayed on during the drive back to work, parked, and stayed on during my drive back home (24 miles). Light is still on this morning.

Other than the gas cap, i know to check the hoses which I hope i can get to tonight. Where should I start? under the hood? near the fuel tank? which is most common to be damaged?

truck is 2002 QC 4x4 4.7L with 79,000 miles. Is this covered under the 80k federal emissions warranty?

This is most likely a split vacuum hose - I had this problem several times until I rerouted the hose for the evap test port. On mine (a 3.9 V6), it was positioned right over the manifold on the driver's side. You just have to trace the hoses, and look for splits where they connect. If there is enough slack in the hose, you might be able to trim off the offending split and put it back on. I don't know if the 4.7 even has it, but the evap purge solenoid has two connections - on mine, it's kinda under the right front of the battery (facing the truck). I've also been slowly replacing all my 1/4" hose with 5/16 fuel line hose - seems to last longer and doesn't seem as prone to split.

I briefly checked out the hoses under the hood. nothing appears to be damanged. i did not disconnect any. I just felt and squeezed them seeing if they collapsed and they did not.

I'm going to jack up the truck and crawl under and check out the lines there.

If i don't find anything by feel, i'm going to start pulling lines out checking for leaks.

does anyone know what the test port is used for? Can i connect a pressure guage? If so, what am i looking for? I would guess steady pressure with engine cold - and valve closed? Fluctuating pressure with valve opened?

Probably gas cap. It'll still click even when bad. I wasn't sure mine was bad until I changed it. After I bought the new one, I sucked it from the inside, the new didn't let any air in. I sucked the old one, air came right through. (gassy air, yuk!) So, a cheap way to check is to just take the cap off and suck.

You need to be more patient. The code won't reset by time or mileage but by start cycles. I think its around 20 or so start cycles it has to go through until it resets. That is, IF the gas cap was the problem, which it sounds like. So if you don't notice any performance problems, wait a little longer.

It's not the gas cap. Replaced and light still comes on. I reset it with my scanner and still comes back on.

I'm checking hoses tonight.

I jacked up the truck, crawled under and found a split hose on the evap canister. It's the larger of the rubber hoses that runs up front to the engine bay.

Heading over to advance to pick up replacement hose now.
