in the past day or so my brakes have started shuddering when under normal to heavy braking. Also, they grab very quickly when approaching a full stop, not to the point of being jerky, but still noticeable. I pulled the driver side front wheel (where it felt like it was coming from) and noticed a slight groove in the rotor with a dull iridescent band around it. The pads look like they will need to be replaced soon but still good ( a little over 1/8" of pad left). Also, I noticed the pad was riding a little high(toward the outside) on the rotor by about a 1/4" and it looked like there was a little chunk of rust stuck under the pad(not where the groove was though). Any ideas on the problem, and how to remedy it?

Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary, but you need to do a break job. You will need to have the rotors machined or replaced and install a new set of pads. Get a manual for the truck so you do the brakes the right way (grease slides and pins, flush brake fluid, anti-seize on mating surface of rotor and front wheel bearing hub, etc, etc). Don't buy the cheapest parts available, you get what you pay for in brake parts.

Also check back brakes for proper adjustment, if they aren't adjusted properly the front brakes will carry too much (if not all) of the braking load and wear faster.

Just a thought. If your rotors are factory originals I'd forget resurfacing them. There already to thin and warp pron. Everyone I know of only got 2 or 3 thousand or so miles before warping including myself

I don't know what year truck you have or how much you have to spend on this. But we all know our brake system is the weakest link of the whole truck. I had a caliper stick less than a year ago. I replaced both calipers, rotors and pads. And my @sshole still puckers at least once a week when I hit em hard. I started to collect the parts for this project that I found on this site. Check this out, it's worth reading and even seriously considering, if you plan on keeping your truck for any length of time.

That's a good question, I wonder what was stock on the 03 Durango? I ditched those ugly steel rims and got some 16X8's so I think I'll be alright. can't be any worse, that's for sure.

Unfortunately, 16" wheels only.

See the following pic from the inside of the 16" rim: http://bigdakotabrakes.gotdns.com/brakes/clearance.jpg

Scottish ancestry means I'm cheap, so I have only replaced rotors because the pad wore completely out and ruined the rotor.
What has ultimately worked best is Reybestos pads, and ignoring the vibration from spots and minor warping..
You might look into upgrading to ceramic pads with the new calipers and rotors.

what socket do I need for the caliper mounting pins? I don't have a full 1/2" drive socket set (what my torque wrench is) So I might need to go out and pick it up before i start, if i do it myself. Before, I fully commit how easy is the whole operation (replacing pads and rotor) and how long will it take? based on the repair manual it looks like a pretty straightforward job and should take only a couple of hours

my '00 took a 7mm hex/allen wrench. should'nt take more than 2 hrs to change pads & rotors.

i just changed my pads for the first time @ 76k miles. i had a very mild pulse braking hard. but since i changed the pads that's gone. just make sure you "bed" the new pads in.

good reading before you do the job:

You should be able to knock it out in 2 hours like daddio said,,, unless you run into something wierd. I replaced the front brakes on my 01 Durango last weekend and it took 5-10 minutes just to get the rotor off each side, C clamp on one side, a pickle fork wedged in the other, some penetrating oil, 5 minutes with a MAPP torch and they finally popped off.

The 01 Durango had female Torx bolts for the calipers, and the same for my old 00 Dakota, Torx

Do yourself a favor. Don't turn rotors and don't bother replacing anything with anything factory. Rather than having to bother with that junk constantly, just get good replacement rotors and pads at all four corners and then don't worry about it again for another 50 thousand miles. It will seem expensive now but it will pay off in the long run when you don't have to keep putting the truck back up on the lift to fix the same problems again.

I got tired of fussing with a new brake problem every 6 months so I now have raybestus rotors in front with bendix pads, and bendix rotors in back with pro-stop pads. Braking is fade-free, vibration free, and have had no problem whatsoever with brake feel or wear in 11000 miles, which is 1000 miles further than the most trouble-free miles I ever got out of the factory setup. And I am HARD on this setup, whereas the crappy rotors started giving me problems within the first 8000 miles of all highway driving.

I just changed my shocks, again. Looked at my ORIGINAL rotors and pad up front, still plenty of pad left, rotors look good, truck stops well.

I still have my original everything, rotors never turned on a lathe, original rear 11inch drums and shoes, original pads, fluids, etc.

2001, SLT, Quad Cab, 4.7, manual tranny, trailer towing, tire and handling, ...............
120,775 miles!! And still stopping well, passing inspection, etc.
