Ok guys, your help would be apprieciated. My experience is limited to brake jobs and oil changes....so any input would be helpful. Also if you could explain any parts or repairs in common terms so that I can understand it, that would be great.

I have a 2001 Dakota with 65,000 miles. I have the 4.7 V-8,auto trans (45RFE), 4x2 extended cab. About a month ago I noticed that when I press the brake for normal stopping, the truck is, what I would call, "hard downshifting" as the vehicle slows, usually around 20-30 mph. Also I have had a problem for a while where my truck idols high, (a couple of times the truck has chirped the tires when place in reverse from park without the gas being pushed) and sometimes the idol goes up and down on its own when it is started.

I took it to a trusted shop and had the transmission flushed (filters changed etc.) last week. While it was in the shop, my guy cleaned my "throttle plate?" (i believed thats what he said) which seemed to take care of the high idol problems. Also, my guy told me that the the trans looked fairly clean...no metal shavings either.....During this time I thought that the transmission service had fixed the problem with the hard downshifting. Well, a few days ago, I noticed that my idol was once again on the high end and was going up and down on its own....Again tonight I chirped my tires taking it from park to reverse. So I am driving tonight and pressing the brake, and sure enough, it "down shifted" hard on me again, right around 20 mph.

Could these two issues be related? Again, the downshifting issue does not happen all the time, so I'm wondering if this is just coincidence.

Any ideas on what to check for my high idol? What would cause what I believe is my transmission, to downshift very hard? I have no service lights related to either issue. Can this be fixed for a reasonable price, could I fix it with limited experience? or should I cut my losses? I have always heard that the rear ends are bad in these vehicles.....Oh, and I bought the truck new so I know that she hasn't had any bad repairs and has not been mistreated.

Any help you can give would be great, any help at all....I'm trying to get a few more good years out of her.

Thanks,

Steve C.

Spend 35 bucks and change the Throttle Position Sensor(TPS). It`s easy, mounted on the drivers side of the throttle body. While your at it clean the Idle Air Control motor(IAC)also mounted on the throttle body near the TPS.

Careful cleaning the IAC it can be damaged if done wrong but is a very easy job too.

Search TPS and IAC for instructions.

It might solve your problems and if it doesn`t your only out 35 dollars and your IAC should be cleaned anyway.

Thanks for the advice. I replaced the throttle position sensor and it took care of my idoling issues.....Very quick repair, thanks again.

As for the downshifting issue, we will have to see.....it hasn't done it yet, hopefully it will stay this way....I wish I were more confident that this issue were taken care of

Hey i know its 4 years later but today i was having problems with hard downshifting, and the truck has been idleing funny and shifting hard into park. searched google, came across this post, checked the check engine light (didnt notice it was on because it always is cause no o2 sensor), said throttle position sensor. Cost $30, took 2 mins to change and solved everything. Truck idles perfect now and doesnt have any kind of shifting issues. thanks jj
