I have a question that mabye you guys can help with. Its not about a dakota its just a general question and this site has been helpful in the past, so I thought I would try it again. I have a set of heads that have been shaved to give me around 10 to 1 compression and I want to know if you can shave a composite plastic intake to match so there are no leaks. This is actually for my 5.3 chevy avalanche. However if it works well on this vehicle I will do the same to my 04 4.7 club cab. Any useful info is appreciated.

Doesn't look like your going to get an answer here. Dodges don't have a composite intake. Guess you need to call a few machine shops or best bet, SPEED SHOP.

OBIO3, what would you call the intake on a 4.7? I suppose you could just call it plastic but I doubt it's as simple as that.

shadetree, you would be the best judge of how much you can take off. How much did you mill off the heads? A little trig should tell you exactly how much you have to remove. Measure and lay out the angles on the heads. Knowing the angles and amount you took off will allow you to calculate how much to take off the intake. Usually it is no more than about .03-.04. The only alternative is trial and error.

My machinist said he cut .040 off the heads for me. I just wasnt sure if you could mill composite intakes or not. Ive never messed with trying to mod a newer engine that much, and there is a lot of difference between todays engines and the 60's and 70's that Im more familar with. However I did take the intake off and it is not sealed with the o ring style gasket so it can be shaved to match the heads I just need to find someone who has enough knowledge to do it and do it right. Thanks for the help though.

Yes, it can be done quite easily. BUT - it does take some slightly differant equipment and a differant technique. Make sure your machinist knows how to do it. Don't let him learn on your parts. If done wrong, big chunks will fly off.

Shadetree, there's not as much difference as you think. What you are doing to increase performance is pretty much the same as we did in the 60's and 70's. Most machinists are familiar with machining plastics or composites. An inserted cutter with plenty of rake and a small radius would be in order much the same as machining aluminum.

I'm familiar with the 4.7 intake but not that of the 5.3. The 4.7 does not have an angle on the intake. The ports on both sides appear to be in the same plane or parallel. Actually this would seem to be more problematic than conventional intake configurations.

Without at least seeing some photos I wouldn't know what you might be up against.

N56629.....I stand corrected. I've done nothing to a 4.7 other then to look under a hood on ONE. Mine is a 99 bought new. At least I said nothing that was going to hurt the guy.
I closed shop before the 4.7 hit the market. That was 1995 so far as I now, no one was using composite at that time. Got a feeling before long the whole engine will be plastic just like they did to the insides.
