Update:

Just finished off my second tank of gas since doing everything...

Running premium fuel with the Superchips set to performance, I've gotten almost exactly 17mpg both times I've filled up. Same pump both times. That's STRICTLY city driving on the first tank and less than 5 miles of highway driving on the second. I'll be making a trip to IL later this week so we'll see how I average with the highway driving...I'm hoping 22+, but I'll settle for 20+...lol

That's also still with the 180*F thermo...I'll prolly switch back to stock after my IL trip, but if I get a chance to do so earlier, I prolly will.

Legendracer97,
You should have a lot more than a gallon in reserve. I've driven over 60 miles with the light on. (I reset the trip odometer to be sure how far I've gone, as soon as the light goes on)

I ordered the "Heavy Duty" package, so I could pay more, I think, and do have the larger tank. I agree it must be an option on the 98 anyway.

Took my trip to IL tonight...also put my 195*F thermo in. Going against the wind, primarily stop and go highway driving (back highways), I averaged 22.88 MPG. Not too shabby for my truck...I bet I can get closer to 25 on my way back.

It's not going to affect your mileage, but since you have changed most of the fluids, you might as well change out the power steering fluid. With 80K on the truck that stuff's got to be funky-chunky.

Didn't do as well as I hoped on the way home...first stop for gas when I was leaving town I calculated it around 20mpg, but that also included all the city driving I did while in IL. Second stop for gas, all interstate driving, 19.9mpg. Apparently I was driving too fast to reach my optimum mileage (had cruise set for 78ish in IL and 80 in IN). Haven't filled up since I made that last calculation, but that's the same part of the trip where I averaged almost 23mpg and it looks like I got pretty close to that once again. Definitely was better than 20mpg.

When I averaged 23mpg, I went approx 100 miles by the time my gas gauge was down to 3/4 tank. When I averaged 20mpg, I got around 120-140 with half-tank remaining (considerably less).

While the gas mileage gains from the Superchips may not pay for the extra money you're spending on premium fuel, I must say that the power gains are worth it. I didn't notice any huge low-end gains...but I have a much harder time maintaining the proper highway speed now without my cruise control on. It pulls much harder when I give it gas at highway speeds now. Passing vehicles on the back highways requires much less effort as well.

That's my opinions on it all.
