My radio, dome light and ignition key lamp all went out at the same time. All the fuses are OK. I am thinking it could be a fusable link. Would anyone know where it would be and what color wire it is?

Not sure on a 93, but is there a fuse box under the hood too? Maybe near the battery? You're on the right track looking for a blown fuse or fuse link. If there are fuse links they might be up by the battery positive post or under the battery tray. I think they are color-coded for the current rating. If you have fuse links, probe each side with a test light or volt meter to check if they are blown. There has to be a blown fuse or open circuit somewhere causing your problem. Probe the little ends of the fuses in the fuse block on each corner of the fuses to test every fuse in the fuse block.

Maybe take a look at a Haynes Book in the parts store or if all else fails ask the Dodge dealer.

I checked the black box fuses there was a blown 5 amp lighting fuse blown - replaced it and still no radio, domelight or key light. In the black box is a delay relay, whats that for? Could that relay cause this problem?

Have you done any work lately to the dash? Maybe a stereo?

I pinched a wire once in my 95 and it affected all those items you said. I did it replacing the heater core. It's been to long, I don't recall where exactly the wire was.

I replaced my battery - I'm pretty sure I didnt pinch a wire. I just need to locate that fusable link when I get a chance. All the wires are covered with a tape and hard to see.

No idea what the delay relay is for. It might be for the dome light. In some trucks when you close the doors the dome light stays on for a few seconds then goes out gradually. That may be the delay. I doubt the relay has anything to do with this problem. Relays hardly ever fail on their own, but they only cost a few bucks at the parts store. Try a new one , or substitute one of the other relays in that socket and see if the dome lights & radio come back on. Just make sure it's the right type of relay.

It's not uncommon to have a problem like this when the battery is replaced. When you put in the new battery, was one of the doors open? When the new battery was connected it may have sent a surge of voltage through the dome lamp and radio memory circuit that either blew the fuse link if there is one or caused an open circuit somewhere. A Haynes or Chilton book should have a diagram of the dome lamp and radio circuits. In some of the older vehicles the radio memory circuit and dome lamps and/or cigarette lighter were all on the same circuit together.

You might remove the battery again and look to see if there is a pinched wire or a bad connection under or around the battery tray like Dan said. Taking it back out might also make it easier to look for any fusible links you might have. I still have no idea if the 93 Dak has them. I thought they stopped using fusible links in the 70s or very early 80s.

The 5amp light fuse had to have been for a low voltage light circuit somewhere, and is probably not related to this problem. The dome lamp/radio circuit is easily a 15 or maybe 20 amp circuit.

Somewhere in your truck there is an open battery positive circuit. It will take some time and patience to find it. Check the Haynes book and retrace your steps from when you put in the new battery.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out or if you need more help.

Jimmy

If that relay is a DELAY switch it can not be replaced with just any relay. Be sure you are specific As to what you need. Best is to take yours with you . Also RECHECK the 5 amp fuse you replaced. If you have a dead short in the system it blew out the instant you tried it. If so, your now looking for a shorted wire. Can't help thinking the battery change and fuse problem are related and your missing something in that battery area. Just to quo incidental. Batteries are heavy and it's easy to accidentally screw up. It's possible you had a wire badly ate up with acid and just a wiggle finished it off.

The '93 definately has fusable links. I am now thinking its not a f-link now because for 30 seconds the domelight and radio worked and just like that quit again. I am thiking when a f-link blows its permanent like a normal fuse. The dome light and radio came on while removing the windshield washer fluid resivour to get to the wiring.
The 5 amp fuse (and all fuses) are still good. So I will continue to wiggle wires and check grounds.... and look for a good wiring diagram to check for the color of wire that is common to all.

Does anyone know where you can get a complete wiring diagram for a '93? I have a haynes book but cant find things like the dome light or key switch lamp - the haynes manual only give "typical" wiring diagrams and shows theres a fuse in the #14 slot that might go to the problem area but my truck never had a fuse in the #14 slot - I have wiggled all the wires I can get to.....Help!!!

Thx OB103 - I'll check those out - a mechanic friend of mine told me to check the small connector in on the ignition, that with a tilt wheel it may have come loose. I did and it was unhooked, I hooked it up and still nothing. I then pulled the 4 amp fuse under the hood and plugged it back in and it all came back to life. I am still going to check out those factory books from E-bay. I should have known...E-bay.
Thx all

Hi. I'm having that same problem with my '98 Dakota. I'm not sure I understand the solution you found, Stan. Where is that small connector located? Also the 4 amp fuse?
Thanks! I know it's been a while - hope you see this.
